Cheap Ammo

I was scrounging through several of my favorite supply outlets and I came across some very inexpensive (cheap) Independence handgun ammo. Is this stuff any good? I know it's cheap crap, but is it reliable and safe. I was thinking about purchasing a few K just to plink with and save the brass. Bad Idea?

For revolvers ANY ammo is good ammo. :D

For semi auto's,you might want to say what gun your trying to shoot it out of and others here might be able to help you with that.

It also does'nt hurt to say what type of semi auto ammo (bullet weight, load, excetera)you want to shoot out of your handgun.

I just got a box for christmas, and they feed through my HK USP very well. I'm using .40 S&W 160gr. No complaints.

My buddy bought them for me, he buys independent exclusively for range shooting, he buys them in .45 acp and shoots them through his XD compact. Hope that helps.

I'd never seen it before, but I was in my local gun shop/range last week and they had it for about $12/50 in 9mm FMJ and the counter guy recommended it. I ran 100 rounds through my Kahr PM9 and P226 without a hiccup. Seemed accurate enough and not noticeably dirtier than WWB. I'd go with OK for range use from my limited experience with it.

Glock 23, 40 S&W
Bersa Mini-9 Firestorm, 9MM
Para Ordinance 14-45, 45 ACP

Not a lot of particulars, just want to shoot for fun and save the brass.

My local guy carried Independence ammo for quite a while. I bought a box of 50rnds of .45ACP because it was something like $13.99/box.
Then I went back and bought another..
and another... and another... and another...
I still have a couple hundred rounds in my ammo dresser. Never had any problems with it at all. I've reloaded it too, and it's fine.
If he still had it, I'd be up there buying it all up. He's carrying some other off brand at the moment, and isn't moving it near as well as he did the Independence stuff. I've never heard of anyone there having any problems with it, and I know a few of them shot a lot of it.

He never had it in 9mm, though. I've always bought the WWB because it's$17.88 per 100.

Georgia Arms

has very reasonable ammo prices, especially for "off"calibers like 45 Colt,44 Special,45 Auto Rim,and 44-40.I say reasonable whern comparing with other dealers/distributors.Their stuff goes bang every time and is nice and accurate. They also have excellent customer service should there be a problem. You get to talk with a real person, and they are super courteous.:)

I've always bought Winchester White box for my Taurus 92 9mm for plinking.

When I bought a SW1911 and started looking around for discount or bulk (quality) ammo I was a little shocked that I couldn't find the prices I had hoped to.

Walmart has been by far the cheapest place to purchase ammo in my experience.

I get a 250 round case of Remington UMC 230 gr FMJ for a little over 80 bucks plus tax. That is compared to the same ammo at my favorite gun shop for 100 bucks. I kind of hate to give my money to the corporate entity that is Walmart but...

I notice at WalMart you sometimes do NOT get more when you pay more/buy in bigger quantities. Example is those "mega packs" of 250 rounds of UMC. At $80 it's not a bad deal, but Blazer Brass goes for about $15 per 50 for 230gr FMJ around here....that equals $75 before tax for 250 rounds, and you don't even have to buy all 250 rounds to get a better "per round price".

^Personally I think Blazer Brass, Winchester White Box, and Remington UMC are all pretty comparable.

I tend to prefer the Blazer, but if you shoot enough of any of it you will find some "duds". I don't sweat a FTE or 2 when I'm shooting the cheapest ammo I can get.

For whatever reason the bullets in the Blazer Brass don't look to be very polished when compared to the WWB or UMC, but IME the Blazer is a bit cleaner burning.

I've used Independence 45ACP in my 1911 style gun. I don't recall any particular issues with it. After I shoot 100+rds of anything thru that gun, it gets quite dirty regardless of ammo used.
