hello
i'm looking for cheap .357 magnum for hunting and plinking. I am looking mostly at used guns and want to stay under $250. Ruger and smiths are expensive from what I have seen so far, I was wondering how good are taurus and rossi as well as charter arms. I do want adj sights and a 3 or 4 inch barrel.
i have seen a taurus 66 for $225 in exc cond. is it a good deal? thanx in adv.

Hey Dave--

Don't know where you areor how gun prices run in your area, but you should be able to turn up bunches of .357's, including Smiths and Rugers, in the range you stated.

I love .357 revolvers, as do many here, but the big picture is that wheelguns are a bit out of favor--with the average handgun buyer, semiautos rule. Thus, favorable prices on revolvers.

I would STRONGLY suggest you keep looking for one of the above two brands. You might try looking in Shotgun News or Gun List for used (police trade-ins which often are 'carried a lot and shot very little').

Taurus CAN be good, but they definitely seem to have a higher percentage of 'lemons' (not really high, but higher).

best, weegee

While I've heard that the Taurus line has gotten better quality-wise, I still stay away from them. While I've never shot Charter guns, I find the fit and finish on the ones I've handled somewhat lacking. Regarding Rossi, I'm not sure why they're not more popular, as they seem fairly well made. I do, however, love the Smith revolvers, as well as the Ruger GP100.

Go to www. jgsales.com Allways have S&W in 357 vor 175 to 225.Get a dealer to order for you.

Dont count out a Dan Wesson either.....they have had there problems but they are fine pistols and while they seem to be more in favor out west, so you depending were your at you can pict them up other areas cheaper,,,if your interested I know of a 4" for $250....its in fla., and the store that has it is owned by a friend...fubsy.

I have heard very good things about Tuarus's.
Smiths are very good guns if you dont care about the politics. Rugers are good too. Would you mind if its used, you might look for a good condition used Smith and you can find them for pretty cheap. I would avoid Charter Arms, because I have read that thier frames are not really strong, and wont hold up for too long.

at one time used SW 686's were available at my local Police Supply house for $239. Wholesale was right at $200 I think.

Probably could find a few at a gunshow without looking too hard, dont let them get too much $ out of you - they should be able to let em go for under $250. Stand firm.

I would not get any other "cheap" revolver than the used 686...... except possibly some other SW LEO tradein.

SW politics should not even enter your mind as it is a used gun were talking about, none of your money goes to massachusetts.

I would go for a Taurus. That will be *my* next 357.

I've had a Taurus Model 66, stainless steel, 4" barrel for a while now and have no complaints. It is reliable and accurate and I didn't pay a fortune for it. It's my truck gun, woods gun, berry picking gun (with snake shot), fishing gun (water moccasins and alligators in the local waters) etc. It goes BANG when I squeeze the trigger and makes holes where I want holes to be made.

You should be able to find a good, serviceable Ruger Security Six or even a Blackhawk well within your price range. I have one each (well, actually 2 of the Security Sixs) and would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Smiths might be a tad higher, but you should still be able to find some that are in good shape (internally) within your range.

Greetings BigBoreDave, I know that you said
under $250.00; but last October I bought a
LNIB (98%+NRA) Smith & Wesson Model 28-2
.357 Magnum with a pinned barrel and with
recessed chamber's, and a 6" barrel for
$270.00. :D Just had a friend who bought
a S&W model 27 with full target accessories,
and a 6" barrel for $300.00. So, bargains on Smith's, or Ruger's for that
matter are still out there. :)

Best Wishes,

I bought a used Ruger GP-100 with a four-inch barrel for $270 at a show a few months ago. Check out http://www.jgsales.com for used S&Ws and Rugers in that price range, too. You'll be grateful if you spend a bit more money on a higher-quality revolver.

they had a rossi .357 snubnose at my local shop for $60 I heard thing about the rossi, and decided to pass, but for $60 bucks its worth a shot.
