Cheap 308 ammo?

I want to use my .308 for p-dogs again this year but shooting my regular hunting rounds gets alittle expensive. So I am looking for a non-corrosive plinking round that will shoot around the same POI as a winchester 150 gr pp, for under $17.99 for a box of 20. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Federal 150 gr Power shok. $14.99 / 20 at Walmart.
Shoots much better than Win. 150 gr ammo in my rifle.

I know how to hand load the problem is the regulations that come with having a daycare in the house. (living at home cause all the apartments in town are income based and I make too much money) It will cost more to buy the saftey equipment then it will be to buy factory ammo for another year or two until I can find a house I can afford.

I'm partial to the match privi ammo from AIM. Their 168gr MHP will shoot 1-1.5" at 100 yards from my Howa varmint.

Also +1 for the DAG 7.62x51 ammo ($79.95 from AIM). It's solid 2" ammo for ~$0.39/round.

S/A battle packs are back down to about $65.00 per. For 140 rounds that's .46 a shot, about 1/2 the price you're looking for at .89 a pop.

Really? .308 for prairie dogs? Don't they weigh like 3 pounds? Seems like a hyper velocity .22LR or .223 would be enough, isn't a .308 overkill?

I've shot them with 22's just to have them go down the hole and show up alittle later, and I would use the .223 but the girlfriend wants to go this year. Besides its good practice for my long range shooting since most of the towns are hunted hard they wont come out if they are close up so a 150+ yard gun is required. Most of the guys that live around where I hunt use the 308 for p-dogs.

+ 1 on that.

Sounds like these guys are really going to war on P-dogs. In the words of Gen. Swannack, they're "going to use a sledgehammer to crush a walnut" by using a rifle caliber that could drop a 400 pound animal. Though it's still not as bad as this Youtube vid I saw where a guy was using .50 BMG on them, lol.

In regards to the ammo, I'd have to agree with the other posters, find a way to reload (even if you have to keep your equipment at a friend's house until you can find your own), or use 7.62 NATO rounds (especially since you're probably going to shoot a lot). Honestly, I would use .223/5.56 in your situation, especially since ammo is much cheaper than .308 and because I have a Mini 14 sitting in my room. :p

Good luck.

Last time I shot P/dogs I used my Mdl 70 '06. Yes a little over kill but the dogs didn't know what it was. We also had a 10/22 with us and when you shot it they went down their holes until they thought you were gone. With the '06 they just looked at each other and stood around. Bad thing for them. :D

I use the steel cased Tulammo 308 from cheaper than dirt and have never had any problems with it aside from it being fairly dirty ammo which in a bolt gun isn't as huge a issue.
