Cheap 12g Load to "work up" to HD BBs?

I'm intending to purchase some sort of 18" 12g HD pump. I haven't shot for 20years so I want to take it to the range and get used to it. I'd like to put at least 100 shells through it before working up to some sort of buckshot load I'll keep for HD.

Can someone advise me what sort of (ideally cheap) shells would do for the first 100. I plan only to shoot at shortish ranges and want to get used to the bang/kick again.

I'm from the UK so I don't have a clue about where/what to buy over here. Is there something at WalMart that would do?

I thank you for your advice.

Walmart sells Remington promotional loads for trap/skeet/dove and quail shooting in a gray/green box. They should cost around $3-4 per 25 and are excellent training loads for general purpose shotgunning. Use those, then step up to buckshot.

Trap are your best bang for the buck. Very sensable working with trap before going up to buckshot by the way. What sort of gun are you looking at?

"What sort of gun are you looking at?"

Ans: I was looking at one of these:

but chaps on thsi forum have convinced me the folding stock isn't too practical for putting a few hundred practice rounds through it (bruised cheek bone!)

So, I'm dithering between a Remington 870HD and the el cheapo Chinese (sadly) NEF Pardner Pump Protector scroll to the bottom of

Everyone says that I should pay the extra $40 and get the proper Remington 870 Express but as far as I can see, its more like $140 extra - the NEF is $198 +taxes at my local dealer and the cheapest I've found the 870HD is $310 + taxes.

only,

Start with some 2 3/4 dram eqivalent, 1-ounce shot charge loads- like Remington's Gun Club, for example, or Fiocchi's Multisport. Those are good light-recoiling loads to learn on. Hint: buy one box of each first and try a few rounds, some guns have problems with one load or another sticking in the chamber etc. Once you find something your particular gun likes, then stock up.

As much as it galls me to say so, I've heard nothing bad about the Chicom 870 clones from the handful of folks I know who have one, save for an occasional sight falling off. I'd have bought one to try out by now, but every time I go looking I seem to find a good used 'real' 870 in need of a new home at the same or lesser price, and wind up adopting another "Cinderella" 870.

Stay safe,

used remington

get a used remington 870, and then purchase what you need to make it useful for HD.

also, walmart sells 100 shells for about 12 dollars.

or, academy sells monarch (russian) shells for 3 dollars a box

Do not buy any shot shells marked with *COUGH*WINCHESTER*COUGH* on the box. They stick more than they keyboard in a college freshman's dorm...especially in an 870. (And it doesn't matter if its the cheapie target load or the Winchester SuperX, they both suck)

FMUStewart....how do you mean stick? I've run a couple hundred rounds of the Wally World Winchester bulk pack through my Mossberg 500 with no cleaning and no problems. -BamaXD

i'd be surprised if you can't find an 870 for less than 300 if you shop around. i would definitely go with the 870 though, i would assume it's easier to get serviced stateside - but as most people who own them would tell you, it's unlikely you'd ever need to, they're pretty foolproof.

if you just wanna get the hang of it, too, most places sell boxes of 100 shells in a few different brands for $15-20 per, usually just light stuff (1 1/8oz. of 7 or 8 shot) for trap. i find those to be a decent value if you want to get a lot of pellets downrange but aren't a serious shotgunner who can afford to buy in bigger bulk than that.

I mean that in my 870 pump, the brass expands and I have to FORCEFULLY open the action (take it off the shoulder, against the leg, and really jerk it). Makes for no-fun-doubles.
