Charter Arms Question

Howdy All,

Does anyone have experience with the current crop of Charter Arms revolvers?

I have an old (23 years) Undercover and I love it. I find that, of ALL the guns I have, I will grab it first for CCW. Heck, even as a house gun as I trust it.

At the time, 23 years ago, and even now, a J-frame would be my first choice. However, I couldn't afford one then so I got the CA instead. Putting thousands of rounds of .38's through it it is great.

Anyhow, I was thinking of getting a revolver for my daughter and was wondering if the new CAs were worth it.

Not that I can see...

For the same money, Taurus is making a better and more consistent product. CA has gone through a few hands since your original one and are filing bankruptcy right now. They claim they're going to merge with another co. (possibly MKS- makers of Hi Point) but that doesn't bode well for any upgrade of their product line.

Just so you know- there was the original CA, then Charco bought the name and went under, then Charter Arms 2000 used the name and is going under.

I agree with omegapd

I have a Charter arms bulldog and a stubnose 38 (forget the model number) both from the mid 80's and there both good guns dependable and function well.
Any of the newer Charters that I have seen have been lacking. And I have heard that Hi Point HAS taken them over which for me means that I will never buy one again no matter how many people think the hi crap is a good gun.
I also agree with him about Taurus, I am a Smith man and never gave them a second look, but last week I picked up a 445 (sub in 44 special) Its as good as the latest 66 Smith that I have handled. Fit and finish are very good and the trigger is a surprise in its quality.
So if you can find a good used Charter thats good but other wise look at Taurus.

My OLD .44Spl Bulldog Pug was pretty sweet. But I wouldn't buy a new CA. Stick with Taurus on a budget!

The new ones I've seen look and feel cheap.Hopefully Hi-Point can improve the line if this info is true.I hate to lose any gun maker.

I bought a Charter 2000 Undercover 38 for $168 new a few months back, and have been very happy with it. Zero malfunctions, amazingly accurate shooting single action, easy to control/light recoil with non +P ammo. I've been told that Charter 2000's are OK until you run a lot of heavy loads through them over time. That supposedly causes them to shake loose, though mine is still tight after about 400 rounds.

I'd recommend one for CC where it's not shot heavily. I read on the company website that +P is OK for occasional use.

I think a merger with Hi-Point's parent company wouldn't be a bad thing at all. If you listen to people who actually own and shoot Hi-Points, most of them praise the reliability of their guns. A little more reliability might not hurt Charter's products.
