Charmed by a Cobra

I take care of a couple of elderly folks in the neighborhood, visiting them, taking them shopping sometimes and bringing them groceries when they don't feel like getting out.

I was visiting with one of the ladies yesterday when she pulled out a paper sack and handed it to me saying "Here, you take this. I don't want it".

Inside was a Colt Cobra housed in a little old leather holster. The gun is perfect with only the tiniest bit of wear on the front sight. Not a speck of rust or corrosion.

We talked and I learned that the gun was her husbands and that she hated it because she couldn't hit anything with it. I insisted on paying her though she didn't want money. $100.00 was all she would take. The gun is worth more than that so I'll make it up to her somehow. I promise.

So does anybody know about Cobras? The serial number is 1154XX, perfect original wood grips with medallion and not even a scratch on the anodizing. Only the tiny rub spot on the front sight. I wonder if I should even shoot it, its so light and perfect.

Oh, my friend does have another gun for self defense - a pre-war Walther PP in 22 cal. Complete in the cardboard box with cleaning rod, dummy rounds and the German instruction book.

RIKA :)

My Cobra is a mixed bag.

The sights are the best I've seen on a snubby. The rear notch is wider than that on my Smiths and the front sight is larger and easier to pick up.
The trigger isn't bad, but it isn't as good as the ones on my Smith snubnoses.
The six-shot cylinder is nice to have, but it makes the Cobra just a bit too big to fit in my pocket without the grip showing.

I did one IDPA match with the Cobra. Speedloading wasn't a problem since it accepts the same HKS loaders as the Smith K-frame. Even with my reloads recoil was smart. After a couple of stages I had to put target pasters on my middle finger. The trigger guard would rap me there every shot and it got annoying.

I take the Cobra out and shoot it now and then, but my usual carry gun is my Smith 649.

I beleive your Cobra was made between 1961 and 1962. I have a Detective special made in 1962. Very nice guns indeed. Shoot and enjoy it but stay away from +P ammo.

Cobra's

I have several J-Frame Smiths and two early (exposed extractor) Cobra's. I enjoy shooting the Cobras the best. The Cobra's (for me) just have a nicer trigger action, and the accuracy is comparable with the Smith's. I love old Cobras, and congratulations on the one you acquired. Best Wishes :)

The gun is worth at least $300 , they are very , very nice. They ARE NOT + p rated ! The later alloy fram shrouded ejector rod one was +p rated for SOME ammo (like 1200 rounds and send it back to factory), You can shoot thousands of reg .38 ammo though and in a 15oz gun that is alot! These guns are usually very accurate! :)

Sounds like you got the deal of the year. Sounds like this lady knew the gun's value and was presenting it to you in appreciation of your kind assistance. Id say the hundred and your continued attention are all the payment necessary. Just my .02
