Charles Osgood features VPC this morning

This morning, Charles Osgood featured an interview with Kristin Rand of the Violence Policy Center. The topic was the VPCs contention that licensing and registration were not effective at preventing gun deaths and injuries (NRA and VPC on same side of an issue?).

The overall tone of the interview was pro-RKBA. Osgood got in a piece about the "the Consitutional right to bear arms" on Kristin Rand and the overall theme was very skeptical of registration and licensing.

However, Rand being who she is - she did managed to get a couple of propaganda shots in that Osgood was either unprepared to refute or believed to be true.

Specifically:

Rand claimed firearms were unregulated.
Rand repeated indicated that attacking the gun industry was the most effective way to reduce gun deaths.

Please drop a line to Charles Osgood and politely let him know your thoughts on the matter. Below is a copy of the letter I sent.

"Dear Mr. Osgood,

I enjoyed your September 19th radio show concerning the interview with Violence Policy Center's Kristin Rand. It is unusual that an organization that so strongly supports the removal of firearms would find registration and licensing to be ineffective in preventing gun injury.

However, I do take issue with several statements made by Ms. Rand and undisputed by you. Ms. Rand indictaed that the gun industry was unregulated when in fact, the industry is regulated at every step, from manufacture to retail sales, by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Furthermore, the gun industry follows a set of standards known as SAAMI in the manufacture of firearms. Guns that do not meet this standard are not produced.

Taken as a safety issue, guns are among the safest consumer products available when used as directed. It was misleading for Ms. Rand to suggest that guns are unregulated or that regulation of manufacturers would have any effect on their deliberate misuse by consumers.

Thank you for your time and thanks for an interesting article in a very complex debate."
