I am in the market for a 1911 at a relatively reasonable price. I have found the Charles Daly Empire, and was wondering if it is a reliable/well built gun.

I have one and adore it. Just be sure to get rid of the factory mags (got Chip McCormic shooting starts with mine) and get something with a rounded metal follower like the CLK-300's from http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/
Mine has been 99.9% reliable after the mag change...havent had a jam of any kind, but dont want to jinx it. Other than the mags its bone stock. Quite accurate too. Best thing about it...fully loaded minus the snob value.

Nice collection, very nice in fact!
I'm going to assume that SS 1911 is a Charles Daly. If so where did you get the grips?
I'm looking over the EMS.

Thanks,

Jon

Thanks alot Fayde. The 1911 is infact a Daly Emperial grade. Its actually my wifes gun. It almost made me cry when she asked me to replace the finely checkered stock rosewood grips with the Hogue rubber grips..but they do feel better and afford a better grip.

I have a Field Grade 6002 Charles Daly that I really like. I think the magazines it came with a good range mags, they've even managed to be 100% reliable for their first 100 rounds, but I think you should get a couple of Wilson Combat magazines for it if you plan to carry it. 26$ is cheap magazine insurance for a carry gun.

I liked the Field Grade because it came with Novac style sights dovetailed into the slide and an ambidextrous safety. That, and it was only 400$!:D

I've never really examined a CD. I was scared off inexpensive 1911's when I was introduced to a Firestorm...the specimen I saw was POS through and through. To top it off, 3 rounds into its 1st full mag, it went full auto! I have, however seen a lot of good comments re: CD and have become curious. What is the consensus opinion?

I have checked out the CD 1911's at a local gun store. They
have a 2 tone with alot of custom stuff for 329.00$ ...its temped
me many times. The gun tolerances (slide/frame play..trigger looseness etc) and the slide ease- feels just like the Para O. and
the Springfield they have in the case, right next to it. I hope that means they function and shoot the same...its still tempting me.
Shoot well

I FOUND A SET OF PACHMAYR WOOD GRIP PANELS THAT HAVE RUBBER FINGER GRIPS BUILT IN AS WELL. THEY HAVE GOLD MEDALLIONS IN THE CENTER. (HARD TO DESCRIBE) I HAVE ONLY SEEN THEM ONCE AND THEY ARE ON MY GUN! THEY RUN ABOUT $35.00 AND ARE STUNNING. THEY ARE BY FAR THE BEST GRIP I HAVE HELD ON A LARGE PISTOL.

Magazines

Would like to put in my two cents on mag choices. I have heard a lot of negatives about Chip McCormick mags and the ominous "flat follower". I have been using Chip McCormick mags in IPSC/USPSA competition since the late 1980's. Back then I bought the flat follower conversion kits for my Colt and Wilson mags. The flat "spring" design gave me an extra round in the mag. They have all shot perfectly for me over the years. His recent 10rd mags are top quality. I have even had success in using these 45acp mags in my delta elite with 10mm bullets. Cannot compare them to the "newer" Wilson mags because I can almost buy two for one in McCormick mags. I'm not sure where this concern over flat followers originated, but make mine flat and McCormick!

Fayde, I've got a CD EFS, had it since September, got about 1000 rounds through it now. All hardball. Hasn't even bobbled once, even with the factory mags.

Trigger pull was rough and heavy, a little time with some stones cured that. The trigger face was sharp and rough. A dremel took care of that.

It has a lifetime warranty, which says a lot. However, I bought it to modify so that didn't matter to me.

I'm planning on getting an all stainless commander length model when funds become available.
