Changing the Face of the Middle East

Elections in Afghanistan; Elections in Iraq; Elections in Lebanon; Elections in Egypt; Women to Vote in Saudi Arabia. Nothing's perfect, but major progress is pretty tough to deny.

I may be no great GW fan, but I'll tell you what. Sooner or later some Talking Head Twinkie's going to announce that all these movements toward greater freedom only prove that Sadaam's days were numbered....eg: The Region was moving of its own accord without our "unprovoked War".

I give it two weeks.

Holy Eye Doctors! Assad may be pulling his boys out of Lebanon!

Seems the Monkey House is getting cleaner and cleaner. :D

Hopefully, some of the democracy will stick. Iran is sometimes a democracy, and smart Germans voted away their democracy in the '30s. So if fairly politically sophisticated people can goof it up, the Middle East is bound to end up with a couple of "Presidents for Life" and State Approved governments-of-the-people.

Really, I think a Constitution and Bill of Rights with teeth is actually as or more important than being able to elect representatives. Sometimes a constitutional monarchy is less dangerous than mob rule.

Honestly, I appreciate some parts of their culture. I like some of their laws. I respect their views on the use of corporal and capital punishment. Religion? I know some zealots in the USA. We could learn share and develop respect for one another. The best thing is that they do NOT have all the nitpicking administrative garbage that we have. I appreciate their freedom from bureaucrats.

You have to realize that none of is due to President Bush. I fullly expect the media to announce any day that all of this progress is due to John Kerry's actions. Had he not screwed up and gotten himself defeated, none of this would have happened.

Finally, something good comes from Mr. Kerry. :D

A close friend of mine is living in Poland with a bunch of college students who just love bashing W. I recieved an email circulating that was highly critical of W and the US mostly for our actions in the MidEast. You could tell it was thunk uped by some genius who was either A) a European Snob, or B) an American trying to bed A above.

I sent a reply back through the chain stating plain facts as you stated above except I added that Egypt looks to be moving in that direction as has the Palestinians, as have the Lebanese and Don't forget that Libya has opened up 100% more than a couple years ago. I think the reason that Europeans and Liberals are so upset is because the United States in spite of our many blunders has succeeded where there was no hope.

In retrospect, the Europeans are the main cause for all of the mess that is God's Monkeyhouse to begin with. The Brits in SW Asia, the French in N. Africa and everybody in Lebannon. Now it must be a really bitter pill to swallow to see that the mess they created is getting fixed by us backwards, hillbilly types who can barely speak from the tobacco juices flowing from our lips.

I have a British Prof who was telling me that he thought the US should get the heck out of the Middle East as soon as the Iraqi Elections are over (this was back in November). He did plainly state that if Bush didn't and things went badly, then he'd be as despised as Nixon and that if he did stick around and succeed, that he would be remembered as one of the world's great leaders in our time.

He now believes the latter, and is awestruck at how W pulled it off.

To tell you the truth, I kinda wonder how he did it myself. It was an incredible gamble, costed us billions, and some very dear, precious lives of true heroes (See Gratitude Post). I am left wondering, is it God, Is it Bush or is it lucky?

pepsquad, do you read "Rolling Stone"? The writer P.J. O'Rourke's name for the Middle East is "God's Monkey House."

Pick up "All the Trouble in the World" or "CEO of the Sofa" this weekend.

History has shown us that a few individuals with strong will and strong convictions can change the world despite enormous odds. George Washington led a rag tag army to defeat the worlds utmost superpower. Winston Churchill held a tiny nation together during enormous attacks. Ronald Reagan defeated the most evil empire know to man, despite the criticisim of most of the world.

I know for one thing, luck has nothing to do with it. In my view it is God finding a man (or woman) able to accept the challange and then working through them.

Middle east progress.

Yes there has been progress, but before we all start slapping each other on the back...

It still has a long way to go and the hatred of those who plan on our demise will never end until they are abolished.

Until the some Arabs learn to love thier children as much as they hate America & the jews there will be no lasting peace.

Amen to that, Charles.
But every journey begins with one step. What's encouraging is the reaffirmation that people universally crave Freedom. I can't believe that would be the case in cultures that have no respect for their children....a mainstay of the desire is generally to provide your children a better life.

Long way to go....at least there's movement.
