That's right!
Last week, the local police and correctional
authorities showed up at the local range here,(Al Ain, U.A.E.) with a convicted murderer (a Sri Laankan who murdered a local boy) and invited any and all to join the firing squad. Enough did that there was no need for the "coup de grace" headshot with a pistol.
Over here, the community is often invited to join in punishment, like flogging and that old favorite, stoning to death. It's considered a good deterent.

Murderer executed in defamation
case

By A Staff Reporter
Dubai - A Sri Lankan convicted of the premeditated murder
of a young national in October 1998 was executed
yesterday, according to Abdullatif Mohammed Al Jasmi,
acting head of the Second Division of the Public
Prosecutor's Office.

Wator Abata Asharij Zembini, 29, a bus driver at a private
school, was put to death by firing squad. The execution had
been approved by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid
Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the
UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

It was attended by the victim's family. Twice they were
asked if they wished to waive their demand for the death
penalty. Both times they refused. The condemned man's
wife and mother visited him prior to the execution. Wator
reportedly appeared calm and seemed to have accepted his
fate.

He embraced Islam on June 8 and chose to be called Abdul
Rahman. He performed prayers shortly before the
execution.

Wator was convicted of killing Nasser Abdullatif
Mohammed Al Obaidli, an 18-year-old national, following a
confrontation on a schoolbus during which he threw out a
school bag of books containing Quranic verses.

The students on the bus told Al Obaidli who threatened to
"bury him alive" if he abused the religion again. Several
months later Wator entered the victim's villa late at night and
stabbed him.

yep, sounds like a real good deterent to me, of course lethal injection is so much more civilized and humane......

Insallah. I've always believed that a couple years of Islamic law would clean up our criminal community - then we could return to a kinder, gentler society.
