Chance of 1022 passage/gun purchase timetable

Hey everyone,

Hopefully there's someone here with more intimate knowledge of Congressional legislative processes than me. I will soon embark on a long business trip that will last until August. What do you think the chances are of HR 1022 becoming law by that time? It's now languishing in the crime and terrorism subcommittee, and while I doubt it will end up passing I really want a semiauto .308 and it would suck if they're banned when I get back. I know most big bills have to go through multiple versions in the House and Senate, but I get the impression that some bills pass quickly.

So I'm trying to decide whether I should pick up the EBR now or wait until after I return, when I'll have more funds and won't be so rushed in making the decision. What do you think?

I could be wrong but I dont see it making it to a serious stage unless the Dems win the White House and 2008. It seems the Dems and Mrs. Pelosi seem to have a bit of big headitis right now. They think the wave is rising. If they took of the rose colored glasses they might find themselves on the crest of the wave which is a trickier proposition to ride in.

Yeah, I don't think it has legs. The Democrats would be positively stupid to spend political capital on this, and it would almost guarantee that they lose one or both of their majorities in 2008. I don't know about the House, but seems to me that half the pickups in the Senate in 2006 were guys who ran on pro-gun platforms in pro-gun states.

Though, out of curiosity, do you have somewhere to store such a weapon should you buy it before your trip? I mean, it might not be the worst idea in the world to put it on a credit card just in case.

But really, if I were you I wouldn't worry too much about it.

JMO, but I think the gun control issue is a hot potato that nobody wants to touch - other than the rabid anti-freedom types like McCarthy and her 94 co-sponsors. Even if it did pass, I believe Bush would veto it. He previously said he would support such a bill but that was when he knew there was no way such a bill would ever reach his desk. The dems knew it was a bad issue last election and for the most part laid low and didn't talk about it.

Bottom line - don't worry about it passing prior to August, but do EVERYTHING you can to keep it from happening.

Have you called your representative about it yet?

-Dave

I've called, and I even sent snail-mail letters, which usually get the most attention from Congress critters. It sounds like the legislative machine moves slowly enough that I can hold off on the purchase until I return.

The VA Tech shootings may cause me to revise my previous statements.

Yeah, me too. High-profile events like this always bring gun control back to the forefront, and generally generate enough public support for it that even pro-gun Senators from pro-gun states may be pressured into voting gun control measures.

I still don't think it will pass. AWB was clearly ineffectual. Bush came out and I feel was speaking to 2Aers with his statement today. "Right to bear arms, but must obey law." You know the gun control crowd is gonna hate him for it, only reason he said it was to talk to us.
