Chamber inserts

I was just thumbing through an old magazine and came across an ad for chamber inserts. The ones that allow a different caliber (smaller) to be fired in a rifle. Something like a .308 Win round fired in a .30-06. there are others as well. It kinda has me intrigued. Any good/bad experiences with these?

US military tried it...

Tried it with the Garand to make it .308 (7.62 NATO) compatible. Discontinued due to the insert coming loose and getting ejected with the shell.

Might be OK in a bolt gun if care is taked with ejection.
