Chamber diameter measurement

Is there an accurate way to measure chamber diameter without having to buy a set of pin gauges?

Drive a pure lead slug through and measure with a set of calipers.

Or go to Brownells or Midway and buy a block of Cerrosafe. Use that to make a casting of the chamber, and mike that.

What if you're checking it out before you buy it? The seller may not be okay with either method. Is checking throat size something you just have to wait to do until after you buy the gun?

You can use a regular caliper, they all have the means to measure inside diameter if used carefully. Or you can buy an inside mike; Brownells has them made specifically for guns.
