CFE Pistol

Still dealing with the powder shortage, bought a can of the above mentioned powder yesterday, as it was available. Anybody out there have any experience with it? Seems to have the same burn rate as AA#5. As usual load data is sparse what with it being a new powder, got some staring info from Hodgdon but I sure hate having only one source with no other for a sanity check.

I am using CFE pistol in a 40 S&W and I like it
from barn burning 135 gn. to factory 180 gn.

And Powder Valley has 4 lbs of 3N37 that the 40 S&W really likes.

what caliber are you reloading?

Everything from 9mm to .45 Colt. Pondering what to use it on first.
Since the shortage I've aquired a variety of powders I've never used before.
two othe examples are WSF and Autocomp both of which also have limited reloading data available and no powder profile available in Quick Load.
The worst part of having this assortment is I've only purchased 1 can of each not knowing what to expect performance wise. Been using the Autocomp and WSF for 9mm so I can hoard my HP-38 for other stuff.
Been having good results with both, just don't like having all these different powders.

I've been using CFE-pistol in 9mm with both 115 plated and 124 coated Lee TC lead boolits. It works just fine and is the most accurate for the coated boolits. I usually have used WW-231 for 9mm, but haven't seen any of that for over a year. I found some HP-38 at a gunshow, since that and 231 are the same powder, I bought that.

I was previously using 4.8gr of WSF with a 124gr 9mm bullet to achieve ~131 power factor.

The shortage was in full panic mode and I was running out of WSF, so I snatched up 8# of CFE Pistol when it became available. Loading data that I could find suggested I might have to load a little heavier. I loaded a series of rounds from 4.6 to 5.0 grains. I was pleased to find out that I used the exact same load (4.8gr) with the CFE as I was with the WSF to achieve the same results. In additions, my Dillon powder drop doesn't need to be adjusted. It drops jus the same as the WSF.

It appears to be a very similar formula.

Interesting comment on the WSF comparison, I was thinking the same about Autocomp, seems to be the same powder only with copper cleaning attributes.

Never had a pistol where copper fouling was an issue. Now if they could make a LFE (lead fouling eraser), that would be something.

I don't care what the marketing scheme is that they want to use. Just as long as it is a good powder at a reasonable cost.
