Century arms G3 sporter vs. cetme .308

ammo first

Never owned or shot any of these military type .308 semi autos. Would appreciate feedback from anyone who's got one or both. SOG is currently offering the cetme for 395.00 , however century lists thier cetme rifle's condition: NEW any input would be appreciated.

Sog is also offering HKG3 rifles in new condition, are these really new? Anyone purchased one? supposedly made in Portugal.

"New" is really not the proper description. "Like New" would be a better one.

They are parts kits imported to the US, outfitted with the proper number of US made parts to comply with the import ban of 89, then sold as "New".

They probably have a few used parts, but nothing that would be noticable.

The G3 is my next planned purchase. I have heard nothing but good reports.

If that G3 is from Portugal, it means an FMP receiver was used to build it. Those are good receivers. The rest of the internals should be H&K, with the remaining parts American to comply with the ban.

FMP was a contractor for H&K and their receivers are good stuff.

I bought mine directly from Century, but as I have recently found out, my receiver is stainless steel. It functions great and takes all of the H&K accessories.

The down side is that I can't get it Parkerized. Other than that it's a great value in an H&K clone.

Often when they say, "Made in (country of your choice)" they mean that the used parts kit was made there. Of the recent offerings, I believe only Special Weapons, on some of their SW3's, and the Interports were made with Portugese FMP receivers.

The SOG receivers are probably Hesse-made.

The Century Arms G3 uses an ugly, cast aluminum receiver. The CETME uses a stamped (or casted to have the same configuration as a stamped receiver) receiver which is closer to the original. I'd go with the CETME.

My Century Arms G3 does not have an "ugly cast aluminum receiver". It is a very nice stainless steel receiver that will take all receiver mounted H&K accessories.

The CETME we have in the shop arrived with my G3 from Century.
The receivers are identical except for the rear sight assembly.

Herr Walther, century semantics aside which gun rates higher in terms of overall condition. They list g3 excellent refinished and the cetme as new. Also what about sights, trigger ect.. and will the cetme accept the hk accessories? thanks.

Well since the receivers are identical, I see no reason why accessories wouldn't fit the CETME as well.

I bought mine back in Feb. so the ad copy and the weapons may have changed. Mine was brand new with a new barrel and not refinished, as was the CETME. Granted, used H&K parts are used for most of the internals, but they are still in good, functional condition. The G3 stock and handguard are American along with a few other parts to comply with the ban. The CETME's are wood and I don't know their orgin.

The only difference in the receivers are that the CETME has the flip up rear sight and the G3 has the H&K barrel sight.

These are really good looking rifles.

The G3 copies SOG has are Portugese receivers and barrels with a mix of Portugese and HK parts and some US internals and furniture (no sling swivel on butt, narrow handguards). A muzzle brake is attached.

Posters on hk91.com that bought them report condition as excellent and initial range reports are good.

Sounds like the best deal going for a G3 copy for the money; if I didn't already own an Interport I would consider getting one.

I have the Cetme with the SW stailess receiver. The more I shoot this rifle the more I love it. The only drawback the the Cetme/HK G3 series weapon is how hard it is to get these things clean. Buy the Cetme and you will be a happy camper.
