Cell Phone Gun

I got a security warning at work concerning a 4 shot 22 that looks like a cell phone/ blackberry. Are these legal to own? I don't think there is any law that says a gun cannot look like something else. Are they available in the U.S.?

To me it would be just a novelty, but it would be a security threat.

Google it and there are photo's - Italian police seized one in a raid on a mafia household.

In the USA, the 1934 firearms act covers "Any other weapon" including weapons disguised in a container which may be fired from within the disguising container. These need to be purchased from a class 3 dealer, or pay the extra fee ($200 ?). So I guess it would depend on the specifics of the device and how the BATF classifies it?

Also some states (CA for one) have pretty strict state laws against disguising a carry gun - they want a gun to look like a gun, otherwise it's banned.

P.S. all the news reports implied that these were all hand made custom jobs, not massed produced by any known manufacturer. So they are not a commercial product, more along the lines of the Jackal's custom sniper rifle :)

Sounds to me like it would be an AOW (any other weapon) and would have to be registered under the NFA '34 to be legal to import/sell/transfer.

You could come across a weapon disguised as almost anything and it probably wouldn't be a registered AOW. Funny, how criminals don't follow the law.

I actaully have a friend who owns one of these. I'm not sure he's ever even fired it... It's kinda cool, but not something I would be inclined to spend money on

They're not new and that's not the only example. There are also pager and other styles. They've been around for at least several years. The various makers come and go. I'd don't recall a US manufacturer but I could be wrong.

I believe the BATFE considers them AOW

and requires registration, taxes paid, etc. They have done the same in the past with pen guns and pager guns.
