I am a Corrections Officer for the County I live next too, and since I started carrying concealed (not very long) I've carried my off duty handcuffs. Same with everyone I work with. Its not because I a 'Police Officer' (because I am not, I am a Corrections Officer, apples to oranges), and not because I have 'power of arrest' such as a patrol officer (the county I work for gives us the title 'limited deputy" that means off duty we are not Officers, just regular joe smoes).

My coworkers, family and myself all carry handcuffs with us whenever we carry because in the unlikely event that something was to happen the odds of the person just walking/running away are much more sever to them 'opening fire' and there is no real way to detain someone (safely) w/o cuffs. If you just sit there with your gun pointed at them if they know the law they can just up and leave, you may NOT be allowed to fire your gun unless they advance towards you (Or so I am told). And even if they don't know the law its fight or flight, at that point flight (may) take over.

So I was wondering was there anyone on here who carries with cuffs? If not why?

I swear I think every response you have ever given me has been negative in some way, shape, or form haha.

No not kidding, just looking for peoples opinions not looking to get flamed. After all there are a lot of people out there that'd flame you and everyone on here for just the thought of owning a gun. (I am obviously not one of 'those' people) :D

No, I've never considered carrying handcuffs.

[1] My goal is to keep myself and family safe, not to detain bad guys. If I stop the attack and the attacker wants to split, that'll be fine with me. I'll be sure to give the police a good description when I report the incident.

[2] If I've just stopped a bad guy from attacking me or another innocent, I'm not going to approach him and try to handcuff him all by myself.

Unless you're trained and deputized, you're opening yourself up to a whole mess of potential problems by handcuffing someone. Everything from getting into a wrestling match with the perp to going to jail for kidnapping

If the guy runs off after you draw your weapon then you have reached your goal. He has left the area and your family is safe again. That should be your main concern. Your families safety. Other people's safety is a secondary concern. If the guy leaves then all is well. Besides, if you can physically cuff him, he isn't much of a life threat anymore is he?

1) The right to use a weapon for self protection is so far removed from the right to restrain, or detain another person, they should not be confused. Very seldom if ever does the average citizen have the authority to restrain someone - even if that other person has committed a crime. One of the only examples I can think of where it is allowed is when a person acts in a threatening manner on an airplane.

2) If you're going to attempt to cuff someone, you'd better be completely succesful in handcuffing both arms together, because if you only cuff one hand - you've provided that person with a weapon.

It's a lot more difficult to cuff two hands together than it is to simply get one cuff on one hand...

Handcuffs and civilians use of same - a whole lot of problems. Even though you're a corrections officer you might consider the following.

Police consider possession of handcuffs a "red flag" and generally find them used in conjunction with other objects which make up a "rape kit."

Police will tend to consider the person as a police wannabee.

Depending on state laws a "citizen's arrest" can only be enforced during a felony committed out of his/her presence or a misdemeanor committed in his/her presence.

You subject yourself to being convicted of false arrest, false imprisonment, unlawful detaining, abduction, kidnapping, possession of criminal tools, etc. etc.
