CCW Suggestions for Mr. Shirt & Tie

So...say you're an average size fella, and you work in a downtown office building. You wear slacks, a dress shirt and a tie five days a week, 8 hours a day. You don't wear a coat or vest, though.

What sort of carry gun would you recommend this fellow get? And how should he conceal it? I've considered Thunderwear, and while I love my Glock, and they _claim_ you can safely carry one that way, I'm not willing to risk it.

What sort of carry options can REALISTICALLY hide a handgun when you're in a shirt and tie--no vest, no jacket, no untucked shirt, etc.?

Living in the hot & humid Florida swamps and having to wear a tucked in shirt & tie at the office with no vest or jacket (I sweat without a vest or jacket, I can just imagine the attention that I would draw to myself if I decided to wear a jacket or vest), this is something that I had to deal with and I've come up with about as perfect of a solution that I can think of (if anyone has something better, I'll be interested in hearing about it).

Action-Direct.com sells something called a "Defender" which is basicly an inside the waist belly band. There are two different styles (one for small guns and one for mid-size guns) in four different sizes (S, M, L, XL -- they might even have a fifth size if XXL but I'm not certain about that).

The gun? A Kahr MK9 -- the smallest, serious caliber gun around. It's about the same size as a PPK but shoots seven rounds of 9mm parabellum and the belly band has a side slot for holding a spare magazine with an additional six rounds.

Well..you didn't state which model Glock youhave at the moment. I know a Texas Gentleman that often can be found carrying his Glock 26 in a Alessi Ankle Holster.

Hanguns like the Colt Mustang, Beretta Jetfire or Tomcat series, NAA Guardian, all can be Pocket Carried with use of a nice pocket holster.

I've been known to carry a Llama Mod IIIA, .380, in my Alessi Ankle Holster. Along with my Beretta 21A in a Alessi pocket Holster.

Just a few examples of the many varities of carry possible.

In your situation I carry a J-frame S&W, in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster, in my front pants pocket. You can't do it with jeans, I wear loose fitting Dockers.

FUD, I'm with you. I live in Oregon, where it definitely _isn't_ hot and humid, but you summed up my situation perfectly. I tend to run hot, so wearing a vest or something larger would be uncomfortable even in the wintertime. So whatever I wear has to be invisible in just pants, shirt & tie.

Leon, it's a Glock 22--full size, so not a pocket gun by any means. Too big (imho) for concealed carry except under a jacket. I've been considering a smaller version in the same caliber, but wouldn't be averse to a Kahr or some other pistol, or even a small revolver.

Al,

I own a 642, and live in Oregon.

The 642/442 are great carry guns for any climate or dress. They retail for $350 on average. There is a used 642 for sale in the local Nickel Ads right now as a matter of fact. If you are concerned about accuracy, the laser sight grips are supposed to help quite a bit. The Public Safety Training Center, located in Portland by Washington Square, has a 442 range rental with laser sight grips. Phone# 503-650-6677.

I've owned a G22, and I would not feel comfortable using it as a CCW unless I was wearing a parka, poncho, or trenchcoat. But that's just me.

Thunderwear is good, and not a concern with a revolver. Room for a speedloader as well.

Regards,

Galco has a line of tuckable IWB's. You just need to blouse your shirt slightly to hide the sharp corners. I carried a Taurus .45 that way for most of the summer.

I live in southern New Mexico and I run a finance company, so while I wear a shirt and tie, I wear no jacket, just like yourself. My favorite option is a Derringer in a pocket with my keys. :)

KelTec P32 in the back pocket with a Graham Custom pocket holster. Or the P32 in the waist band with the belt clip and the shirt a little bloused. The tuckables didn't work for me, looked like I had a briefcase stuffed in my pants. YMMV.

Regards,
Frank

What FUD said, only with an MK40. Right front, with the shirt "bloused" out a little on the tuck to keep from printing though the shirt.

JimR, I tried the MK40 and couldn't shoot it accurately with defensive ammo -- wasn't the gun but me. At least for me, I found that it had too much of a kick for such a small gun. Don't have a problem with the recoil of larger size .40S&W's but the MK40 has one hell of a kick! FUD.

Snubnosed revolver (probably an airlite) or PPK in a Alessi ankle holster.

I am in the same situation and I found that a Kel-Tec P-32 works best for me. You can conceal it pretty much anywhere. I've found that behind the wallet works best, but I'm starting to use the stainless clip quite a bit too. However, stopping power with the 32ACP is an issue. It's definitely not a 9mm or even a .380, but it's worlds better than a 22LR or a .25ACP. If you compare a small Beretta, Taurus, or PPK to the P-32 you'll see it's far lighter and easier to manage.

In no particular order.

Ankle holster with MK9 or Light weight snubby.

Pocket holster with light weight snubby, or very small auto (P-32, 32cal Beretta, etc).

Kramer shirt holster with just about what ever you want. I've done a G21 in one, I wont say its confortable but I did it for three straight days and it did not kill me.

Off body carry (briefcase, planner)

Belly band with a compact auto; the Kahr MK9 is the best in class IMHO. You can either wear them cross draw in the hollow under your peck (very concealable but the squeezing of the rib cage can get tiresome) or IWB with your shirt tucked over. IWB you can do either cross draw appendix position or traditional strong side behind the hip. IWB is slightly less concealable as there is a buldge in you belt curve that is detectable to someone who looks for it.

I use one of Gunslinger's belly bands. They work well with a shirt and tie, because you can tuck the shirt in and there are no straps or clips sticking out like on a regular tuckable IWB. I carry a 1911 in mine.
