CCW Requirments in Your State

A post in the Handguns & Pistolcraft forum by Dave AA relating an experience he had at the range inspired me to ask a question here.
For those of you living in states where CCW is allowed what are the requirments and your experiences with those requirements. Good, bad and ugly.
I'd relate my own but in the state of Missouri we are not allowed CCW due to ballot fraud in last years election, a subject I've already talked to death here.

We live in a time in which attitudes and deeds once respected as courageous and honorable are now scorned as being antiquated and subversive.

Texas has a pretty stringent set of rules concerning training.

My experiences have ranged from very good to horror-movie bad. The worst being (believe it or not) prison guards. I used to hate training those guys. Only time I would actively wear armour on the range. And I'm going to make it a rule that no one chews tobacco on my range-EVER! They seem to believe that if they've seen a couple of John Wayne movies and have a cheek full of RedMan, they's got all the larnin' they's evah gonna need.

Twitch, twitch.

Best experiences have always been the ladies that show up wanting to learn something and who are willing to learn it.

You just have to learn how to kick their boyfriends/husbands/fathers/generic male relatives off the firing line.

"Yes, sir, I understand that you endorse point shooting. Here we are going to use the front sight."

"I have no doubt that your .490 Loudenboomer is a fine pistol. However, let's get your wife well-versed in the fundamentals with this .22, shall we?"

Florida is a 'one-shot' state. No tests, written or marksmanship required. Nor do you have to specify what weapon you'll carry. The license is 'concealed weapon' not firearms, so you're able to carry any manner of legal weapon concealed, not just a gun.

You do have to safely discharge a firearm in the presence of a certified instructor.

Additionally, you must pass a FBI/FDLE fingerprint test and be free of a history of drug/alcohol abuse.

Florida is also fairly liberal about where you can carry. No bars, schools, sporting events or law enforcement buildings. No 30.06 provision like Texas, so individual businesses can't dictate 'no ccw' as far as I know.

Here in VA, we have to show proficiency (NRA handgun saftey course $40) and pass the same background check as for purchasing a handgun. It's for a handgun only. All of my large circle of friends has their CCW. Takes an advertised 3 weeks on average, but I've never seen a qualified applicant take more than 4 days to get approved here in my town. Cost is no more than $50 for the application.
There are strange grandfather laws, though, that you have to be aware of, including the requisite "Off Limits" places. Virginia is so strange that there's even a book that covers all the specifics available from Bloomfield press.

PS The LEOs here by and far love the fact that there are plenty of CCW holders in my area. Much mutual respect.

Vee haff no requirements here in .......Vermont
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Sorry guys, don't know what came over me :D

Seriously though, the only rule here is that you cannot carry with the intent to injure another person, and we all know about demonstrating intent.
There are some restrictions about where, such as courthouses orstate buildings, unless you have permission of the person in charge.
I find that most people here are pretty relaxed about open or concealed carry.

IN Oklahoma you can take the 8-hour CCW class for $50 and the instructor will furnish the firearm in some cases. It's like a hunter safety course with more emphasis on the law relating to carrying and the legal implications of displaying or actually using your pistol in self defense. You get fingerprinted at the local sherrifs, pay $25. They send your 2 passport photos ,$10 at moto-photo, another $100 and your application with proof that you took the class to the OSBI and if your okay by them you get your permit. You must be 23 yrs. old. The course of fire in the class is simply to demonstrate your ability to load and discharge the weapon in a safe manner, no markmanship is required. I urge every OK resident to get a permit just to show the authorities that we are serious about RKBA. There are drawbacks of course. Anytime you get stopped by the police you have to declare that you are armed.
y driving has improved dramatically. Then there is the hassel of not being allowed in some places, although the number of posted no concealed weapons signs seems to have decreased over time.

Take a course ($90 in my case), pass a proficiency+marksmanship test (not very hard but people have failed it) and pay $10 to file an application with two passport-sized photos. That's the easy part.

Providing oral sex and other favors to the local chief of police or sheriff is the hard part. I hear it is much better up north where "visiting Minneapolis" is a legit reason for a CHL...but not here, at least for us peasants. One reason why I will never come to the aid of the uniformed hacks around here (would help beat cops but not their top brass).

Here in Texas, you first have to get a kit from DPS, who then sends you all the paper work needed to take to the CHL class, (the license costs $140 for four years, whether you qualify or not) and while at your class you get your picture & fingerprints done (which are used for an FBI background check). You have to take a fifteen hour class, regarding laws, handling, etc, & have to pass a written, as well as a shooting test (rapid and slow fire at three, seven, and fifteen yards). If you pass the class, and the background check, the license takes around six weeks from the time you mail the kit back to DPS

BTW, the class breakdowns as follows:

I. Introduction to course and pretest (1 Hour)
II. Use of deadly force/public contact w/ Law Enforcement (3 Hours)
III. Non-violent dispute resolution (2 Hours)
IV. Weapon storage/safety practice (child safety) (1 Hour)
V. Range Safety, basic marksmanship, handgun use and evaluation (2 Hour)
VI. Handgun Proficiency (3 Hours)
VII. Concealed handgun license requirements and restrictions (2 Hours)
VIII. Final exam and certification (1 Hour)

I live in, well look at my username. NO test no inspection. You have to go to the local police dept if you live in the county you go to the sherrif. Pay them 10 bucks for a background check on you takes about 2 weeks they fingerprint you and then you send your approval to the ISP (indiana state police)with 15 bucks and they usually get it back to you in 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer. I think it is great alot of people have permits here, and I think the more permits the better. I made my wife get a permit even though she doesnt carry, but I think it will push up the states statistics.

NO test required. No ownership of a firearm required.
Submit proof of address, driver's license and application along with $21.00
3-6 weeks you get a card in the mail to tell you to pick up your permit.
Once you arrive at the County Sheriff's Office, they take a picture of you. The permit looks like a driver's license.

The cost involved in getting a FL CCW is pretty reasonable, too. $30-$50 for the required 4-hour training course (where you have to safely discharge a firearm in the presence of an instructor), $5 for the fingerprints, and a $117 fee.

If you're clean, you should have no hassles.

Make me a smarter shooter :D

Very easy here in WA. No training requirement. You can carry any gun you want. You can carry almost anywhere you want. Complete state preemption. You don't have to tell LEO your carrying or licensed unless they specifically ask. No law in WA addresses businesses or other private property owners restricting CCW, but of course they can, (jeffelkins take note) because it's their private property.

Here in Michigan, Each county has a CCW board and they get to decide how to issue. Very few a shall issue, most are may issue ( read yeah right. ) You need to live in the county your are apply in for at least 6 months. Take a gun safety class from an approved school. Pass FBI and State background check. Finally you need to go before the board any explain why you want/need to carry a concealed gun. Most of the boards require proof that your life is in danger, or that your profession makes you more likely to be in danger ( doctor, lawyer, etc. ) *sigh* There is a bill being worked on, passed the house and senate in slightly diffferent forms that will make all of Michigan shall issue. Hopefully this year.

Once you have the permit you can pretty much carry anywhere, though most police officers think you cannot carry in school, church, bars, etc. You can if licensed to do so, i.e. a CCW.

Cost is the class, $5 for fingerprint, and $10 for the permit.

Here in Illinois, and all of the other 49 states, we don't need a CHL/CCW license to carry a weapon, because our right to keep and bear arms is protected by the 2nd Amendment.

Accepting any lesser rule, than the rule of law (the U.S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights), is merely a surrender to tyranny in progress. Any lesser rule is nothing more than an un-Constitutional infringement upon our sacred Rights.

It is "We the People" who govern this land. Last I checked, all of our Rights are still intact.

There are no dangerous weapons, there are only dangerous men.

California

Pick up app at local police/sherrif.
Take a course accepted by the agency you are applying with. Mine was 12 hrs taught by a Reserve Sherrif who ran a private range; Three evenings-2hrs class and 2hrs range each session. No standardized test. He cleared the content of the class with the sherrif. Cost $60 AIR.
Fill out application with typical bio stuff, references (two of my four references were LEO in the jurisdiction), list of weapons to be carried, and a statement of "need".
You call in to schedule an appointment for an interview. Took a couple of weeks to get on the schedule. You show up with your pistols, application, check ($75?), and good hair cut. Had a short interview with Lt. I think. He read my application, looked at my training certificate and NROI range officer certificate. He asked my about where I went to school and what I studied. He has a son getting ready to go to college and so we talked about schools in the area, carrear paths, and job outlooks. He said every think looks fine her lets go down and get you fingerprinted. Clerk checks my guns and records SN#s. 8 black fingers and two black thumbs later I'm on my way. 6-8 weeks later the permit arrives in the mail.

Pennsylvania:

$19 and two color photographs gets you a permit for five years, shall-issue. Fill out form with two references.

No fingerprinting, training or proficiency test. Carry handguns, and in some instances, SBRs and SBS.

Under state law, can pretty much carry anywhere, except for state courthouses (which are required to provide lockboxes for your weapon) and secondary schools (subject to an affirmative defense of lawful purpose). You can carry into sports stadiums, bars, nightclubs, churches, etc.

My opinion: good for us. HCI gave us a grade of D-. If we went to Vermont style carry, we'd get an F. The less prior restraint (training, tests. etc), the better.

Some quirks with certain game commission regulations, but that's about it. Not a legal opinion or legal advice, yadda yadda.

Paul Revere,

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but try coming to my state (NJ) and see what happens when you announce you're carrying. I'll try to visit on weekends.
