Does anyone know about the ccw lasw in NM? I thought I read somewhere that in NM, if you can buy a gun you can carry it?

Except for certain areas, NM allows you to carry (concealed) in your vehicle. Your vehicle is considered an extension of your home. However, if you leave your vehicle with weapon in hand (or on person), then you have broken the law. NM has no permits for carrying on person.

I'm from New Mexico. There is no CCW, for anyone, period. It's one of the 7 or so "no-issue" states. However, open carry is legal, with the usual restrictions on bars, banks, courthouses, etc. In my 21 years there, I think I can remember seeing 2 people with openly carried guns.
In NM, your car is considered an extension of your home for the purpose of storage and transport. The gun can be anywhere in the car, and in any condition (though the police might get jumpy if they see it). Until Brady/NICS, there was only the "yellow form" - no background check, no waiting period. There is still no backgrouond check required for private transfers.

NM gunnies have to get real good at pulling a loaded mag out of one pocket, an unloaded gun out of someplace else and then quickly "correcting" the problem

NM has seen some CCW proposals of late, and it may be politically possible to switch to straight-up Vermont carry. It's a really odd place in that it's a pro-gun state with no formal CCW system at all.

Apparently, it is illegal to carry loaded and concealed in New Mexico -- obviously, there are some other illegal carry provisions, such as establishments that sell alcohol -- but it is generally legal to carry:
