CCW in GA

A little surprised.

Applied for a GA CCW ... $39 and an hour of my time, takes about ten weeks, have a nice day.

No class, no instructions to keep me outta trouble, no test to make certain I can load a gun or hit a barn.

I asked the Sheriff fingerprinting me about how to go about learning when to carry, when not to, when I can pull, when I can't ... he said most of what I needed to know would be on the back of the license and if I had any questions, visit georgia.gov (not sure that's the website he gave me, it's in the truck).

I guess I expected something along the lines of a drivers license ... a quick mutiple choice regarding general laws, an eye test, something.

Is it like this in most States? Just curious.

New Hampshire is $10 for four years, only requirement is passing a background check which the Police have 14 days to complete. There's no training or fingerprinting pre-requisite.

New Hampshire sounds like a great place to live.

Yes,

GA makes it easy. See, they believe in people having guns and made the system painless (and you have no waiting period or NICS if you have a CHL) (I believe that is still true, I haven't been in GA for about 4 or so years).

Unlike some.

But all the states need to go the way of Alaska and Vermont.

Yes very painless process, but it would be good to get some personal training on your own, there is a place out west of Atlanta in douglasville that offers different levels of training...

Florida CCW

Florida is about the same. There is a class you need to take but if you served in the military you do not have to take the class. Florida also has a reciprocity agreement with Ga., N.C., Tenn., Alabama, Va. and 23 other states.
So your good to go in at least Fl. and maybe some or all of the other states mentioned.

Thanks for the advice dj. I have a half dozen friends that consider themselves experts ;) ... but one that really is. He's promised to get me started. :D

I'm kinda on the fence. I'm a proponent of 'right to bear arms' and get hot under the collar when I see States like NY, then again I get nervous when States hand out ccw's without attaching some responsibility. A firearm in the hands of someone without any type of safety training can be a very, very dangerous thing.

USP - yep, still true in GA.

Er, except that even with the permit you can't carry at a 'public gathering'. What's a public gathering, you ask? The law suggests that sporting events, church functions, state parks and restaurants that serve liquor for consumption on premises are public gatherings.

Who knows what else the AG will decide is a public gathering, and therefore off limits.

Church function? Please! That would include a wednesday night bible study advertised in the church bulletin, but HELD AT MY HOUSE!

Oh yeah, and they've also said that the parking lot of a public gathering is still the public gathering...so you're still a gun criminal if you leave it in the car before going to dinner at red lobster.

And one more thing: depending on the county you're in (God help you if it's Fulton), it might take a lot longer than the legally mandated 60 days. Even in very conservative Hall Co. I was told 3 1/2 months...since the FBI bg check can take that long.

North Carolina is similiar to Ga with the restrictions. My sister lives down there and won't even bother with a permit since it's pretty much illegal to carry anywhere she might need a pistol even with a permit.

Thanks for the link, nc.

Nope, taxes in Fulton make it un-inhabitable. Add the gun laws to that I guess. I'm in Forsyth.

To clarify, I'm completely against regulation ... except when it's minimal required training. I'd be a little more comfortable if I knew for certain the ccw's in my State were clear which end was the "business" end.

A good example is my wife. Poor vision in one eye, prone to panic in an emergency and, well, let's just say she's not exactly even tempered.

If she carried daily, not sure if the stress induced heart attack or the bleeding ulcers would kill me first. Love ya babe. :D

I live in Fulton Cty, so im an exception to the rule or perception i guess,, ive also have my permit for awhile now 3rd time now and have never had to wait more than 60days for my permit, just wanted to share that bit of info.

Alabama: Walked into the sheriff's office and told them I wanted to get a permit. They filled out name, address, other vital's. Paid my $25 (per year) and walked out. 10 minutes. My wife's took even less time, cause we got hers when I was renewing mine. :D

Training is a good idea and practice is essential. I just have a hard time with the concept of the Government, at whatever level, putting conditions on a right guaranteed in the Constitution. Like you can't exercise free speech on this forum unless you pass a spelling test! I applaud those states which truly have shall-issue right to carry laws.

Its not that GA does not attach responsibility to their permits, they just make it painless to get the permit. Just like anything else, It is YOUR responsibility to know all applicable laws. No one is ever responsible for teaching you laws. When you take on the responsibility of applying to carry, you also take on responsibility for learning the law.
