CCW in GA - I applied but still no reply

I applied for my CCW two months ago and still have not heard anything. I don't remember how long it took my friends to get theirs but it didn't seem this long, maybe it's a case of watched pot. I don't have a record so I don't see how I can be denied. Any words of wisdom from any Georgians out there? Is there a number I can call to find out the status?

It takes about three to four months and if they have a lot of requests, up to five.

I've had mine for several years and it's almost time to renew. Make sure that you are aware of where you can and cannot carry.

It's kind of disgusting, but there are a lot of restrictions in GA. One place you can't carry is MARTA, another where alchohol is served etc. Know the law.

The best part is that you buy guns without a check. The bad part is that now YOU are registered, not your guns.

If you are not familiar with weapons and concealed carry, I suggest that you search this board for information and take a course from a trained professional regarding the handling and storage of your weapon.

And practice, practice, practice so you know your weapon and yourself.

I hope you get yours soon. Maybe they are so jammed with too many applications to process in a timely manner :D

I will have to get my second renewal next year. When I renewed the first time they wanted to keep my old one and told me to wait for the new one in the mail. I insisted otherwise and found out they have a temporary they can issue and I kept my old one also.

Maybe they can issue you a temporary also. In Gwinnett County we have to go through the Probate Court last time I went to renew.

I had to go to the probate court and give them a check then to the sherriffs dept to get fingerprinted and stuff. I thought someone would give me a list of rules when I did that or explain the legalities but apparently they just send the permit in the mail and the fine print is on the back. I'm concerned with my permit going to the wrong address, postal service being what it is. That's why I was wondering where I could find out the status. I don't like the idea of being registered and did not get my permit till now for that reason but thought it over and decided to get it, esp. since all the negative gun press. Not that long ago carrying a firearm was no big deal, now with the "zero tolerance" and all . . . .

The probate judge has to sign it once the background check is complete - call the probate office and find out what's going on.

Can't carry on MARTA?

Everyone stupid enough to NOT carry on MARTA, please announce yourself.

To hell with "their" unConstitutional laws.

Disclaimer: Not to be mad or poke fun at anybody, JUST a rant.

I think my CCW was back to me in 4-5 weeks..., six, at the outside.

Maybe we've had a big influx of gun owners lately..., we can only hope!

As I understand it, the Georgia situation is this. State law requires the probate court judge to issue the permit within 60 days if no reason is found that you cannot have one (i.e., shall issue). However, apparently the current Attorney General has issued a ruling that says the judges cannot issue a permit until the background checks have been completed. To further confuse matters, state law specifies that law enforcement agencies participating in the background check (generally your city and/or county police & sheriff, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation) have 50 days to complete their checks and report back to the probate court. However, with the AG ruling in hand, they appear to be ignoring the law and taking as much time as they want.

I applied for mine a year and a half ago, and it took 58 days from then I applied to when the judge approved and issued it. A few days later, I had it in the mail. A friend of mine just received his permit after about a three months' wait. The exact time seems to depend a lot on your county of residence; Fulton county seems to take the longest (from what I've been hearing).

hube1236: There are no downloadable forms. You must apply in person at the probate court in your county of residence.

KaMaKaZe: Yep, can't carry on MARTA. Which is probably why a serial rapist decided to try his hand at the pickings from some MARTA buses and trains not too long ago.

Papercut, WATCH ME!!

I have averted assault while standing in a MARTA station twice in my life.. ONLY because I had a knife handy, and was agressive in nature to provoke the ideal that I was not going to be robbed/beated easily.

I happily carry concealed, even when I know its unlawful. I'll refuse to become a statistic, just because I decided to be a good boy and follow the law. I have yet to explain this successfully to my girlfriend. :(
