CCW holders: What was your reason

For getting your permit? I am in CA, not in Los Angeles County. I guess there is no "shall issue" in my county. I wonder if I can put down in my application, "I want a CCW for personal self defense" and have it approved?

BTW if anyone knows of a sheriff who has no problem approving CCW's, please provide info.

Thank you.

yy.

Good Luck. If you are in a rural outlying county there are some sherrifs who have no problem issuing, and self defense will be an acceptable reason. If you are in a city of any size...forget it. At least for now. Jim March has the CCW situation in CA nailed down pretty good, you might do a search on that.

In Indiana it is shall issue and you either get a personal protection or hunting permit. Either way they give it to you. A word of advice, don't use any phrases like its my 2nd ammendment right. Even though it is, most leo's really raise an eyebrow when it comes to things like that. Just say its for personal protection, nothing more nothing less.

The reasons I put down: (1) I frequently travel to a city with a very high crime rate to see relatives. (2) My wife, daughter and I take camping and four-wheeling trips to remote desert locations. (3) The nature of my work entails attendance at public meetings, and I have received some hostile anonymous phone calls and letters.

I also wrote that frequently unloading and loading the weapon in order to transport it legally while traveling or camping created an unnecessary risk.

Be safe.

In Oregon, no reason is required. If you apply and pass the background check, you get the CHL.

My personal reason is quite simple: I REFUSE to be food.

anand: I couldn't get that page to open. Anyone know how difficult it would be to get a CC licsense in Ohio?

You want the best reason? OK, So you bought cell phones for you and yours and guess what?...you found out 911 should be called "Dial-a-prayer"!

Sorry for the original double post. The reason above worked for me in So.Cal. It's vaild anywhere, you might try it.

I got mine not because of a specific traumatic event but because I know hat nobody can protect my family or myself like I can.

Plain and simple.

CCW is a small insurance policy. The odds are that I will never need my pistol, but if I do and don't have it, I or my family is going to be dead...

NRA? Good. Now joing the GOA!

An acquaintance of mine told me that his lawyer advised him to only say "to exercise my constitutional right as stated by the 2nd Amendment and Pennsylvania Constitution."

His reasoning was that saying "self-defense" may land you in hot water in civil court where a lawyer may interpret that as premeditated. i.e. "now that i got me a gun, people better get the hell outta my way."

Of course, what flies in Pennsylvania may not fly in your neck of the woods.

Guys, he is not asking why you think you should carry.

He is asking Calif CCW holders what reason they wrote down....since they have the CCW, their reason worked. He wants to know what works.

I applied a few years ago, but was turned down as my reason wasn't sufficient. We have a new sheriff now, who is allegedly more "friendly" but I haven't re-applied as yet.

My unsuccessful reason: single female, business owner, frequent night travel and rural domicile. Unofficially I was told that since I didn't carry large amounts of cash or items of high value; or wasn't a high profile person, there isn't a "need".

Atticus: It is my understanding that Ohio has no provision for concealed carry licenses. You're out of luck. Jared

Anand, thank you for the link. I checked it out. It was helpful. Do you know the CCW Instructor Dennis Kennedy? He posted often in that site.

tuc22, seriously? you got your CCW permit in CA with the cell-phone reason? What county do you live in?

DC, Thank you for reminding everyone what I am looking for in this thread. I found your information helpful. Which county turned down your application?

YY, if you're in Kern County, there used to be no trouble getting one there. Shasta County, too. Tulare County, maybe. There may be others but those were the three I knew were CCW firendly, when i left Kalif, almost three years ago. Best of luck, but, unfortunately, the communistnazis who have completely taken over Kalif. politics and most of Kalif's top cops, have outlawed self defense and the Constitution. J.B.

I told them that I traveled the back roads quite a bit. At times carrying vast sums of cash (big wheeler/dealer).
Be safe, MDS

I live in San Bernardino County Ca and I put down that I wanted one for protection while traveling, and I didn't have any problem. I have had a CCW for 15 years before in Shasta County.

I was told when I first applied (and subsequently received)for my CCW in CA, that "Personal and property protection" was the acceptable phrase.

Madera CO. used to be somewhat lenient, along with the city of Isleton up near Sacramento.

What may work for individuals is the fact that ANY Chief of Police of a small town or city MAY grant a CCW to a RESIDENT of that small town.
IOW, if your county sheriff is not amenable to granting CCW's, check out the surrounding smaller towns.....might be worth a small geographic for some!
