ccw check

a few weeks ago I went to the gun shop in tenn, did the background check and walked out with a handgun. I want to conceal carry. why do I need to have another background check? what makes it different from the one I did to get the gun in the first place??

Not sure about Tennessee gun laws, but buying, and getting a concealed carry perit are two different things.
You say you "did the background chech, and walked out with a gandgun". By background check do you mean the NICS phone fall tyat the FFL dealer makes?
Again, every state is different, but in my state the process to get a CCW permit includes a much more extensive background check by lical LE, finger prints, and an 8 hour class.

because that store does not dictate whether you get a concealed weapon permit. all your background check proves is that you're not a criminal. the store checks it so that they know that you're allowed to legally own a gun. PD has to do the same thing but they go into a lot more detail than making a 10 minute phone call. that is why in a lot of states showing your Concealed weapons license exempts you from needing a nics check, because it proves that you're able to own a gun.

The background check you got at the gun store was a NICS check required for handgun purchases.

The background check for your concealed license/permit is a whole lot more in depth and is a once time check. You won't have to do it again as long as you keep your license up to date at renewal times.

ok, thank you. I just figured the background check to buy the gun would be more strict then the one to carry. what more do they look for in a carry background check?

it was a 10 minute call.. I was expecting more of what you went through. that's why I don't understand why my carry permit check is more in depth.. maybe I'm slow... but it seems backwards

Actually all firearms purchased from a FFL dealer.

I did a little more research on Tennessee hanfgun purchase laws. There is a seperate background check in additin to the NICS phone call
However, as per gun purchasing laws referring to acquisition of a handgun, the purchaser must be subject to approval pending a criminal history background check conducted by the Bureau of Investigation of the state, and administered by the licensed dealer at the time of the handgun purchase.
Furthermore, the licensed dealer must include the purchaser's pertinent information, as well as the weapons make, model, caliber, and manufacturer's number, which are necessary in completing the background check.
If the applicant is void of any criminal history that disqualifies him from being able to make the handgun purchase, the bureau issues the dealer a special approval number, and the buyer is responsible for fee up to ten dollars for the background check itself.
But the CCW permit backgrounf check is a seperate process.

I'd start by looking up the criteria to obtain a TN CCW. Most states require more than just passing background check. What a states background check consists of can vary from one state to another. Some default to the name NICS system. Some don't. By the way, each additional gun purchase will require an additional NICS background check. In some states that is waived if you already have a CCW. Some require training classes.

Most of the information given in this thread is people telling you what THEIR state requires, which is of little value to you.

You can start with googling Tennessee concealed weapons or concealed carry permit to learn about the procedure in your state.

The real answer is because you are being oppressed, having your natural rights violated, and your constitutional protections ignored. Unfortunately, any solution to that involves consistent, patient, and long-term political activity on your part. In the mean time, grin and bear it.
