CCW and Restrooms

Guys and Gals,

While traveling out and about with your ccw, where do you put it when you must use a public restroom? By this, I mean doing #2 in a stall. I have not run across this situation yet because I keep holding it until I get home :D But I would like to hear your opinions on this subject.

At work the handgun and holster goes on the toilet paper holder. The holder is big enough to do that.

Haven't had to worry about it any where else.

Depends on the layout of the stall...I have to confess I like to dump in the handicapped stall since there is more room to store my handgun out of sight. The new babyseats they put on the backs of stall doors in some malls are cool, I can set my handgun right down in it, right in front of me.

I leave mine with the “handgun-check” girl in the lobby.

If I’m packin more than one, I usually give her a nice tip for minding them for me.

I was washing up in a police department restroom. I heard a thunk, looked over toward one of the stalls, and saw a Glock 22 still in the holster bouncing out from under the divider. Then I saw a hand stretching toward it. I quickly retrieved the gun and left the men's room. Positioning myself were I could discretely observe the bathroom door, I waited. Two minutes later out rushes a very disconcerted looking man. I knew him as one of those "lazy carrier types." He looked around, then went back inside. I quickly wrote out a note and shoved it into the holster. I then placed the gun and holster directly in front of the door, and hid again. The door opened, the guy looked down, and with relief retrieved his rig. He read the note, then with a worrie expression, left.

The note read:

One of three things:

1. I'm a 10 year old kid. Thanks for the gun.

2. I hate cops. Bang. You're dead.

3. Get another holster before this happens again.

I noticed that the officer in question had a quality holster on the next time I saw him.

This, along with the ease of use while seated, is another reason to consider shoulder holsters. If you are going to put it on the belt, get a holster with snaps on the belt loop or a J-hook, so you can remove it before you unbelt. If there's no place else to set it down, just drop it into the crotch of your trousers once you're seated. At least that way you won't forget and walk away, leaving the weapon on top of the TP holder.

TP holder or back of the seat. Haven't walked off and forgotten one yet. 'Course, I'm gettin older, and they say the memory is, uhm, what? Dang, can't remember now...

I always use the stall that is in a corner, that way you only have two sides to worry about, instead of 3. Often, this is the handicap stall, which means more room in which to maneuver while deciding. My routine is to drop it into my pants crotch, that way it is hidden but readily accessible. The real key is to decide what works for you, then develop it into a routine, so that you won't end up going off and leaving your smoke wagon for some goblin to find!

I place it in the crotch of my pants and take off my hat and place it over both sometimes if I feel that it is not hidden enough. I have at one time placed the pistol behind me on the back of the toilet, but I often think about what would happen if after I take care of business, I would simply get up and forget it is there :(

skeeter, I would have responded more quickly, but I stopped by Network Solutions to reserve that domain name ... ;)

My favorite story from our CCW instructor related to this issue.

LEO was using the toilet, and placed his Sig 220 on top of the tank. Sloping top. As he is finishing up, and pulling up his drawers, he notes the pistol sliding off the tank top. He grabs for the gun, catches the trigger, and fires a round into the bowl. Before flushing. Not a pretty sight. :( ;)

You didn't really try to connect to that site? If so, e-mail me as I have some really nice water front property in Florida for sale. We also live in the same town and might punch some paper some time together.

I use private toilets. Many places have smaller bathrooms that you can lock the door as you enter. I know where most are in my area of work/travel.
If on the road or shopping where this is not a option then place in pants leg or in jacket pocket hung on hook inside door.
Check if the back of the stool is really out of sight. Next time you are using the "stand ups" look to the side and you can often see the tank top of the first stall.
Don't use the coat hook to hook your trigger guard on. I was told that a LEO did that in the station and when he was done he somehow pushed it and caused it to fire. TWICE????? I would think he would have to go again.
I do always have a fear that I will forget it in the can. It has happened to many people. In Northern Minnesota a small town Cheif of Police left his gun in a changing room and a dumb lady clerk picked it up and it "went off by itself". He gave himself a weed suspension. "I don't recall if with or without pay" :)

If your pistol grip permits why not tie a small lanyard to it? I mean just a 1" loop of nylon. Glocks and HK's have a place to attach a small lanyard to the bottom of the pistol grip... simply hang your weapon on the coat hook or latch of the door?

Door coat hooks aren`t good. BG sees you wearing a jacket going in. He figures your wallet, keys to that nice Lincoln etc are in the jacket and reaches over. You`re a little indisposed at this point. As mentioned already, crotch of the pants is best. You won`t forget it. LEO`s should put the gunbelt around their neck.
