CCW and motorcycles

Who does it?

Should have my CCW permit in a couple more weeks, and need some options for CCWing on the bike (sport bike).

Compounding the problem, is I'm short and fat (5'7", ~230 pounds).

I've got a tank bag I can keep it in while riding if need be, but I'd rather have it in a holster so I don't have to take the gun off of me everytime I get on the bike.

CCW gun is/will be a Glock 27.

Anyone that rides, have some ideas?

Fanny pack is the best way to go, centered forward just above your "guygear" :).

This puts the gun over your lower intestine area, and NOT over anything that's easy to damage like the liver, spleen, kidneys, etc. In a crash you'll tend to "fold forward" around it anyhow.

Tactically it gives you ambidextrous access to the piece, which can be important if you're a victim of a "run off the road" robbery (it happens to bikers) and don't know which arm will be broken when the goblins come to check out their take :(. It's also very unlikely to come loose in a crash.

CCW on a bike? Most people I know strap it on their hip, or in their vest pocket. T-shirts and leather vests cut your options down and t-shirts are optional. Bikers don't wear fanny paks, they don't have tank bags, maybe saddle bags if you have a bagger. They do sell handelbar gun locks if you want to mount your gun there but most bikers use them only when they go into a gun unfriendly business. Most bikers don't try to hide their guns.....unless they are in a bar ;)

Fanny pack in the front is a no go on sport bikes. Would definately be in the way.

I'm not so much worried about trying to draw my gun while I'm riding, as I am just having it concealed without taking it off me when mounting the bike.

I carry mine, usually a Kimber Ultra Carry, in an El Paso Tortilla on my right hip that conceals easily under an untucked shirt. A shoulder rig under a light jacket or vest also works well. I'm 6'1" and substantially fatter. ;)

People always bring it up but it's rather silly to adjust your mode of carry for fear of "it" causing injury in a crash. There is already so much going on and you are completely exposed so the idea of a holstered handgun actually making matters worse seems laughable. Yeah, you could land on your weapon and rupture something and you can just as easily land on anything else that's out there with the same result.

I ride with a shoulder holster. I carry a G26 in a KL Null USH holster when on a Bike, You can still draw with either hand. Nulls are very good Holsters and they will conceal under a vest. In the summer I just wear a very Loose Zip up windbreaker. Never had a problem. I have a tombstone toolbox also(Lockable gun safe on the bike). Mines a Norton 1970 750 Commando(Kick start only):D

I carry mine in a tank bag...yeah it's a pain in the ass....but better than a ruptured sleen or broken ribs. I've been an EMT and first responder for my share of bike accidents....nothing in your pockets is the best...no pens, air gauges, Leatherman tools, keys etc.-nasty injuries from all of the above.
When I go inside for a meal the tank bag goes with me. For shorter breaks I use a small TSA baggage lock on the zippers.
The "GS" in my name stands for BMW GS...my bike of choice. On longer rides I have a pair of tank panniers that attach to the tank bag- my XD .45 fit's nicely on one side and within reach. For dirt riding where I'm riding offroad I wear a fanny pack with a padded foam insert. I dont carry the .45 off road.. instead I carry the Scandium S&W J-frame .357.
The only things I carry in my jacket pockets if I have to are a SPOT locator beacon and my cell phone.

You can trust me, you want nutter in your pockets, vest, coat or otherwise, secure weapon ,knife on your bike. ---> what PDXGS said

I ride all the time with my gun in my Blackhawk fanny pack holster.

It has a nice "double locking" clasp so I feel pretty secure.

shoulder holster would be, IMO, better when riding a bike, otherwise an IWB riding at either 4, (or 8 for LH) and something to cover it would work

I ride the baddest sport tourer on the planet,,,hence my user name,,my bike has a small lockable compartment that holds my Kimber pro carry in the draw position,,,very, very, easily accesible, even on the move,,,besides, the fanny pack really looks g@#, well you know,,its almost asking for someone to kick your a@%,,no matter what you have zipped up in it,,,,sorry just my opinion,

I ride a Triumph Tiger, which sits similar to a sport bike and a KTM dual sport. A small revolver in one of those cheap IWB clip holsters will go in the inside pocket of your jacket very nicely. Then when you dismount, you can stick your jacket in a saddlebag and lock it.

Fanny packs do look silly, but it's about the easiest way to carry when you ride and it's hardly noticeable when you have all your gear on.

Motorcycle CCW

I carry most of my guns with a clip draw on mt right side it is concealed nicely there and if I need it I can get to on my bike. If I am carrying one of my small guns NAA Mini Mag or My LCP it is in my front pocket in a uncle mikes #2 pocket holster. The clip draw works great for me with my gun combos either my Kahr CW9 or PM40. My Ruger sp101 also carries very well like that. In my opinion the fanny pack :barf::barf:is out any self respecting biker I know would not think of wearing one of those but thats just my opinion.

Hi, Often carry My Colt D.S. II .38 in My front jeans pocket while out on My 06 XL1200C. It's there so often i don't even realize it anymore. Little speed strip 6 in the watch fob pocket and I'm good to go. .......WVleo

That's the difference between a "biker" and a "motorcyclist." The latter just wants to ride and doesn't care much what it looks like.

Depends on what you are riding?

When I am on my Goldwing its a no brainer I carry on my hip in my usual in pants tuck covered by my leather jacket or my vest. It is still easy to get to in a hurry but it is also concealed. On the other hand when I ride my crotch rocket 2007 Ninja ZX14 I am so leaned over the bike my traditional carry spot looks like a sign that says my weapon is right here! That is when I change up and use my shoulder holster, still fits neatly under my leathers but the weapon is concealed. You are going to need multiple carry options depending on weather conditions, clothing and other factors so no one sure fire fix, but these are some of my personal tested ways that work for me personally. Good luck, keep it concealed.

While a fanny pack would work, they instantly make anyone look like a tourist. While I am in fact a "tourist" on the bike at times, I try not to stick out like one...atleast while I'm off the bike anyway.

I've been riding for about 7 years now, and am well aware of the dangers of carrying something hard or sharp on your body while riding. I'll accept that risk for a nice ccw holster that'll work on the bike. Fwiw, anytime I'd riding aggressively through twisty mountain roads, anything that was in my pockets, gets moved to my luggage.

Zubulonsmith - I ride a SV1000S, and from my experience, it sits nothing like a Tiger, even with helibars on my bike. I don't think a normal IWB holster is going to do the trick, but it might. I need to just buy one, and see how it works for me.

I'll skip the clipdraw with my glock. Everything about it just seems wrong with a glock. I suppose I could get one of those trigger blocks that goes behind the trigger, but I still don't like the idea of that at all.

A shoulder holster setup will also not work. I ride with a jacket on (regardless of weather), but I almost always remove the jacket as soon as I get to my destination. That's going to be a problem with a shoulder holster setup, unless I wear my t-shirt over the holster setup (does anyone do that?).

Anyone make a sob, iwb, shirt tucker holster? :)

robodoc - I realize I'm going to need multiple carry options. Having a hard time finding exactly what I want for another ccw gun though.

Anyone make a single stack, .40, that's significantly smaller than a G27? Something small enough for pocket carry, that's "glock reliable"?

i cary SOB with my xd40 sub in a bladetech UCH.

i have had MANY motorcycle wreckss on my suzuki katana with the gun on. most low speed low sides, and a few low speed high sides.
my fastest was a 50mph low side.

ive went thru 3 leather "sport bike" jackets. i never got a injury from my gun, even with much back sliding.

i did however get a good bruise once from my cell phone.
