What is the difference (if any) between a CCI CB and a 22 Short? Also, I heard that the ATF has made CB's illegal because they are too quiet. Has anyone heard anything on this?

The CB long cap is less powerful than a .22 Short as it contains little to no powder. I chrono'd some many years ago and they were making about 600 fps. Aguillia has introduced a .22 Colibri load (NOT for the Colibri pistol) that is primer only. They claim velocities of just over 300 fps. It is doubtful that ATF would be interested in banning this ammo because the reason suppressors were added to NFA '34 was a fear of poachers using them. The CB, CB long cap, and Colibri to not have enouch power to poach much more than a squirrel or rabbit and will not cycle in a semiautomatic firearm. The ATF is also currently allowing the Colibri ammo to be imported from Mexico.

A CB cap (either long or short) fires a 29 grain bullet at about 600 fps. Out of my 24" bolt action Ruger 77/22 they are a bit louder than my Gamo 890S air rifle which fires .177 pellets at 1000 fps (about 10 grains).

Clearly a CB cap has more punch than a pellet gun. They are great for pests at short ranges (under 25 yards). You can dispatch backyard gophers without the neighbors being disturbed. Out of a good scoped bolt action .22 they are pretty accurate.

.22 shorts hit 1000fps or so and are much louder.

In theory, the CB short will be more accurate because it is not approaching the sped of sound ans will not face turbulance like the .22 short will.

Well thank you folks! That clears things up a bit. I have shot the previously mentioned Agullia powderless .22's. They are a 20 grain bullet and claim 375fps. Actually, I have made a few bucks bringing some in town from Las Cruces. The golf course is buying tons of them for pest control. :-)

I won't forget the first time I shot a CB cap. In the backyard. At the fence. I...THOUGHT....it would be like a BB gun.

Imagine my surprise...and chagrin...when I heard "Whap...whap....whap" as it went through the fence, then the neighbor's fence, then the next yard's fence.

IF a kid had been playing in one of those back yards....SHUDDER.

STOOPIT!!!! Ignorant then but now I know what a CB cap will do.
