CCI .22 CB long

I tried some of these yesterday and must say that I was rather disappointed. I expected them to be quieter. While they didn't make as much noise as the high velocity federals that I usually shoot, they still made a pretty loud POP. Are any of the other brands of "powderless" ammo any quieter than this or should I just forget about it and save my money on regular rounds?

aquilla makes a couple- real quiet but not very accurate. The mini-caps are accurate but as for noise, they do better in a rifle.

Is Aquilla's called the "super colabri" or something like that. I think I have heard of them. How quiet are they? Is there anyone who has shot CB longs and Super Colabri and could give me a comparison?

The Aguila Colibri (375fps) and Super Colibri (500fps) are cap gun loud from my Ruger MkII and S&W 63, air gun loud from my 77/22. The Super Colibri noticeably the louder. Both launch 20 grain conical bullets (yes, CBs: those CCI products are misnamed.) Both have proven "minute of mouse" accurate on my indoor hunting forays. :D Aguila warns against use in rifles due to the risk the bullet may not exit longer barrels, but the 77/22 has not been a problem. TEST a longer barrel with care!

Cheaper Than Dirt, www.cheaperthandirt.com, recently offered Super Colibri at $5/brick. Keep an eye out, they may again.

Rumor has it that the Colibri has been discontinued, but I have been unable to confirm.

The super colibris are very quiet... a super colibri fired from an old JC Higgins revolver sounded about like CB shorts fired from my rifle (perhaps a bit quieter). Actually, the super colibris were quieter than my Crossman CO2 air pistol! The box does warn against firing them from a rifle as Huck Phinn states. I've never tried shooting them from a rifle, but I don't really care to, either. If you're using a handgun, the super colibris or colibris should be just what you're looking for.

Yes, I am using a handgun...it's a S&W 617 with a 4" barrel. So the Colibris are quieter than the Super Colibris...correct? I am looking for the quietest round I can get. I have never fired CB shorts from a rifle (or any gun for that matter) so that comparison doesn't help me much. Is that crossman air pistol like a pellet gun? I used to have a CO2 BB gun that was pretty quiet...much quieter than I remember cap guns being.

OK, I just loaded alternate chambers of my S&W 63, functionally identical to your 617, with Colibri and Super Colibri and fired them without hearing protection on my little back porch range. Both produce no discomfort outdoors, though this is the first time I have fired them without hearing protection from a handgun. I have not and will not shoot them indoors without protection. The Colibri are quieter but not enough to matter to neighbors, wildlife, or livestock. I then loaded alternate CCI CB Short (CCI catalog #0026, 29 grain bullet, 727 fps from 18.50 inch barrel, same stats as the #0038 CB Long, and, BTW, not powderless) and Super Colibri. On a purely subjective basis the CCI CB are 2-4 times louder to my completely uncalibrated ears and I will not be firing any more without protection.

My best guess? If you shoot in a basement or a room without a common wall with a neighbor, the Colibri and Super Colibri will bring no complaints. Shoot either in a room with an exterior wall, especially one with windows, and someone on a sidewalk or in a neighboring yard will be aware of it.

Note well: even at close range, the Colibri and Super Colibri will bounce off plywood. Use a bullet trap that safely deals with that.

This is the pellet gun I was talking about: http://www.crosman.com/site/listing/1051

And CB shorts and CB longs have the same amount of propellant if I remember correctly. The CB longs were developed to be able to load into magazine-fed guns.

The super colibris are the quietest load I have ever seen. The colibris may be quieter but I have never seen them for sale. Super colibris out of a .22 are (in my opinion) the quietest option you have without going to a blowgun. :)

It was my habit to buy .22 long cci mini caps for my rifle because it is chambered for long rifles. One day, I accidentally bough a box of short cbs. They clock 700 fps from my remington 514t and will group into an inch at 25 yards. The lower powered colibris will group into 3 or four inches at 15 yards with a clocked velocity in the 300 fps range.
From a rifle, the cci rounds are quiter than a single stroke air rifle. The neighbor's dogs don't bark when I shoot a squirrel with them and they will elimate somewhat large targets as well. From a handgun, they make enough noise that the neighbors will hear them and go " hey! somebody just shot a gun."

The colibri's are fine on tin cans from my Smith 617 just as long as the can is no more than 15 feet away.

Haven't tried the Super Colibris yet (they're in the mail), but my Henry .22 loves the CCI CB longs... and they're about exactly as loud in that rifle as a standard BB rifle. With noticable improvement in distance and accuracy and, of course, varmint stopping power. I can't imagine how the Super Colibris could be even more quiet...

The only drawback with the CB longs in my experience is that they tend to shoot low.

a friend tried the super calibres in his copy of the stevens favorite falling block rifle. There were much more accurate than they were in my revolver and he found them useful for shooting rodents. The ordinary calibre gallery loads were not usefully accurate from my old remington target rifle.

I've been able to consistently nail aspirin at twelve yards with the super colibris outta the 10/22... surprisingly accurate.

Anything shot from a pistol will be loud. CCI CBs out of a rifle are as quite as a air gun. Ok a little louder on a 16" barrel but a 20+" barrel it is wisper quite. Actually my single pump Daisy IS LOUDER than my 26" Remington Model 12A pump .22 with CCI CB shorts.

You need to shoot Colibri ammo in a rifle for the silent shooting.

Handuns are LOUD period.

I use the CCI CB's from my son's Savage Youth Model. The Colibri wouldn't penetrate 1/4" plywood@20 yds and the CB's will. The CCI is a little louder, but I'd rather have the extra penetration when I shoot at suburban vramints.

Both are loud enough to attract the neighbors attention from my 5.5" MKII.
