CBS show calls Charlton Heston a NAZI!!

Here's what I sent:

As one of FOUR MILLION members of the NRA and one of the EIGHTY MILLION gun owners in America I'm thoroughly disgusted by the recent episode of The King of Queens in which the NRA and its President Charlton Heston were slandered.

Neither Heston nor the NRA espouses anything remotely resembling Nazism. On the contrary, Hitler implemented sweeping "gun control" measures (after which our 1968 Gun Control Act was modeled, by the way) which disarmed the Jewish population, allowing them to be murdered in the millions. That's the legacy of gun control.

I will not only boycott your station but all of your advertiser's products (and let them know) until such time as a public apology is made concerning this outrageous slander.

CBS was always the lousiest of the four major networks anyway, but you've slumped even lower now.

Good! Here's mine:I am appalled at your irresponsible demonizing of Heston and the NRA as "nazis" on your King of Queens show.

Your slanderous, baseless, ignorant and petulant character assassination of 4 million of law-abiding Americans just goes to show how little you deserve those same people to support you and your sponsors.

I am saddened by your insensitivity towards this group and I am disgusted by the increasingly trashy and low-quality products you put out.

If there were any honor, responsibility and professionalism left in your management, you would send out an apology to Heston, the NRA and the many millions of American gunowners.

Thanks guys, this really torked me off. I also called my local CBS affiliate and the woman I spoke to gave me a number for the NY offices and I called them as well. I also plan on writing a letter and if someone who watches the King of Queens could let me know what some of the sponsors of the show are, I will write and call them as well.

Yes, the statement was made by a character on the last episode of the show.

However, said character was portrayed to be an unlikeable dolt, and an environmental whacko.

The show's storyline consisted of the main character trying despertely to avoid spending the weekend with this knee-jerk liberal and his wife (old friend of main character's wife). Get it ?

Make of it what you will, but the comment was made by a character portrayed as an idiot.

Make your opinion known, but let's not be knee-jerky ourselves, without a firm grasp of the facts.

IMHO there's nothing wrong with a bit of knee-jerkiness in defending the "first freedom." Too bad no one was sufficiently knee-jerky about the unconstitutional abortions enacted in 1934 and 1968.

Bruegger, are you sure that's what you meant to post? You think it's a good thing to go for a knee-jerk reaction, even if that means that we threaten and maybe even boycott a show that was actually trying to do us a good turn, no matter how small? Are you serious?

Rikwriter was just saying that IF the comment was meant to show that the character who said it was a "knee-jerk liberal dolt" then it's a COMPLIMENT to the NRA, not an insult. And if we fly off the handle and complain, then not only do we look like ungrateful, knee-jerk right-wing fanatics, but we look like we didn't understand the joke, which can't be great for our image.

Why not start with letters and emails directly to that particular show asking what they meant--politely? What's the harm? If they say "yeah, we're talkin' about YOU, gun nut" then you have the green light to make them miserable as best you can, but let's not alienate potential allies. We have none to spare.

ummm, CW ?

Again, check the context of the comment before you jump to judgement.

...and while you're at it, be reminded that "Raymond" IS A DIFFERENT SHOW !! We are talking here about the "King of Queens", not "Everybody Loves Raymond".

Good grief people, if TV is melting your brains like this, please, TURN IT OFF.

I just don't think there IS a context in which it's OK to call "Moses" a Nazi. ;)

Besides, irrationality and flying off the handle over perceived (if imaginary) grievances has worked quite well for the forces of darkness. Did any rational person think the 1934 and 1968 Gun Control Acts would prevent crime? I don't think so. Plain and simple knee-jerking. Let's see: ban all alcohol so gangsters have to distribute it and they use tommy guns, so let's ban those. Did that end crime? NO. JFK shot with a mail-order rifle so let's ban those. Did that stop crime? No. Time to give them a bit of their own medicine.

If someone made a racist remark, even if he was portrayed as a dufus, people would be pissed. Calling "my president" a Nazi is bigoted and offensive. I don't care about the context.

Context doesn't matter?

So, at the end of every bad crime movie ever made, when the killer makes his speech about how good it is that he's murdered all those people, you start writing angry letters about how the show endorsed murder because the words "murder is a good thing" were spoken?

Or do you apply common sense, decide it wouldn't make much sense if the murderer didn't think that way and it's not an endorsement because IT'S THE MURDERER who said it, and let it go?

Well, it wouldn't make a lot of sense if the liberal dolt thought Charlton Heston was swell. Liberal dolts think Charlton Heston is a Nazi. Again, I didn't see it. I just want to make sure we're not jumping to conclusions, which looks likely.

OK, OK, you got me. I understand your point. Context is important. However, my point is if you repeat propoganda over and over, no matter the context, it starts to affect people's attitudes and reinforces existing stereotypes. How much anti-NRA propoganda already spews out of the idiot box every day?

You wanna see knees jerk ? Have the same "idiot" say Jesse Jackson is an "Uppity N*gg*r" .All of a sudden this "idiot" becomes the Network Poster Boy ( no pun intended ) . The network execs will be sucking Jesse's and Al Sharpton's butts into next year . Not to mention generous donations to ALL their favorite causes . Which I believe is THEM!!!

Ah, Bruegger, now you're stating your REAL argument. And I can't disagree with it--it's true. I just ask that you remember that even the television media is not monolithic, so even though there's a ton of misinformation all coming from the same medium, that doesn't necessarily mean that anyone at that particular show is responsible for any of it.

Paratrooper, you're exactly right. That's EXACTLY what the reaction of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, all the network heads and every other rabble-rouser would be. And you and I would shake our heads in wonder that they could be such knee-jerk, unthinking liberal fools that they didn't consider the context of the remark!

"Consider the source."
Some wise old guy.

So, why are any of us watching the Klinton Broadcast Network? CBS, home of George Stephanopolis, Donna Dees and now Rosie. Always the first to defend the Clintons. Need I say more! I don't want to have to have this talk again. Shun them Children! It is the "evil eye" of broadcasting.
