I think it would greatly depend on the size of the hogs, literally. If the hogs are of normal size, up to say 200 lbs, then a good jacketed soft point would likely be best, especially at higher velocities, like out of a carbine (you didn't mention). However, I have seen stout 270gr SP bullets, fired at fairly high velocities (1700 FPS) literally stopped by the shield of a very large hog at a range of 50 yds. In the case of large hogs, cast bullets, allowing more penetration might well be the best way to go, IMO.
