Cast bullets through ported barrel...

Going to be taking delivery of a Taurus M44SS6 in the next couple weeks. This will be the first ported handgun I've owned.

I have on hand a large quantity of Lasercast 44 cal 240 grain RNFP bullets that I'll be loading for this handgun These are very hard & precisely cast bullets. I'll be loading these 44's fairly light, around 1200FPS.

I've had great results using Lasercast bullets in 41 Mag, 44 mag (rifle) and 45-70 (rifle). Excellent accuracy & little or no leading, but none of these had ported barrels

My question is to those who have shot cast bullets through ported handguns such as the Taurus hunters. Have you had problems with the ports getting plugged with lead shavings, or otherwise had experiences that would discourage using cast bullets in a ported barrel?

Thanks for any insight...

Hello ND,
I have a few Dan Wesson revolvers with muzzel brakes on them and a Taurus PT92 with ports on it, and I regularly shoot cast in them.:D

After a couple hundred rounds in the DW and thousands in the PT you can tell that you have been shooting cast but I think I would have to shoot over 100,000 rounds in my guns for a problem to develop.

To clean up the lead you may need to brass brush the lead out.

I hope this helps.

Happy shooting

The Magnaports on my Smiths clean up nicely. The lead wipe-away cloths will remove the lead oxide around the port holes on the exterior surface. I cut patches out the cloths to use on the barrel if fouling is particularly bad. The ports clean out well with a solvent-soaked patch on the end of a toothpick.

I've never used a Taurus, but it should clean up about the same.

I shoot lead through my V-comp all the time.

No real problems, but it does make a mess, that requires a bit of extra cleaning effort.
