cast bullets for 30-30 win

Has anyone out there tried the RCBS 30-150-cm mold???

It`s only available in .309 dia. and flat base. It looks like one I`d like to try, but I hate to buy one and decide I don`t like it.

Just looking for some cheap light loads for some old 30-30s.

If you are looking to "get your feet wet" with casting , the new double cavity Lee moulds are very nice. The C309-170-F is just the ticket for the 30-30. I like the 170 grain weight and gas check. For $20.00 and a little smoothing of any rough edges on the sprue plate, and this price includes handles, it's a great way to try casting.
This bullet shoots great in my 30-30 Winchester model 94 and a 03-A3 Springfield Rifle I own .
The new Lee double cavity moulds are much improved and I really like them.

Gary,

the profile in the photo of the 150 grain is real close to the flat nose I was looking for.

Thanks for your help.

Nitescout, I don't know how involved your casting setup is, but the advantage of the RCBS mould you referenced is that it doesn't require gas checks. So in that way it is a little more economical. However most plain base bullets perform best at 1400 fps or less.

Thanks, Stubbi...The plain base was why I wanted to try the RCBS...That being said, I went ahead and ordered a lee 150/.309/gc mold...I just couldn`t resist the $17.95 price with handles.

I picked up one of the RCBS 30-150-cm molds awhile back. I chose it because I wanted to avoid the gas checks.

It casts good looking bullets. When seated to the crimp groove, the 30-30 rounds cycled well through my old 1894 in 30 WCF.

Haven't done enough work with it yet to comment leading or accuracy. I plan on running them no faster than 1400 fps.

BBarn , thanks for posting I guess we think alike...did you get the RCBS top punch, and die? do you use the Lyman / RCBS sizer/lubricator?

Yes, I also picked up the appropriate RCBS top punch. Not sure whether the .309 sizer die was RCBS or Lyman (I like either one). I use a RCBS Lube-A-Matic for sizing/lubing. Using standard Alox lube with generally good results (mostly 44 Mag and 45 LC cal. bullets so far).

I also use the RCBS rig...with the heated base plate; and I use RCBS hollow stick lube. let me know when you get a batch lubed and sized. If you care to sell any, I`d like to try some.

Thanks!

I've got a couple dozen in Lyman #2 that are unsized. I can size them to .309 and lube them with Lyman Alox, which should be very similar to the RCBS stick lube. How many would you like to try?

The Lee C309-150-F gas check mould is my favorite for 30-30. Mine drop at 155gr. and are very accurate in front of 20gr. of AA5744. It is about the only thing I shoot from my micro-groove Marlins and my Mossberg. Works great in all of them. Good luck

My favorite 30-30 bullet is the Lyman #311291, a 180 gr. bullet in my alloy. Sized .310" it is accurate in my five 30-30s, four .308s and several 30-06s. I have several other molds but that one is probably the most usable for the three cartridges I normally shoot. I started with that bullet for the 30-30 back in 1954, a one cavity mold that worked perfectly. I still have it and it still casts good bullets. I have the Lee bullet that was mentioned and it's been a good shooter in the limited use I've given it.

BBarn...I`d like to try about 20 if you want to sell that many. send me a pm with details on payment and shipping.

Thanks!

I bought the Lee C309-170-F for my first rifle bullet mold and couldn't be happier. Just as accurate as jacketed bullets in my Win94 and I can shoot them at pretty much full power if I want. Cast with straight wheel weight, water dropped, tumble lubed and sized/gas checked with the Lee push-through they average almost 180gr finished and shoot very well with no noticeable leading. I probably won't be buying any .30-30 ammo from here out, hopefully I'll get a chance to shoot a deer with that load next year.
