Case Soot

Does anyone know why i would be getting soot around the rim of the case, I was using new lapua brass cci 400 primers 95g vmax bullet.

Thanks
Peyton

That soot happens with lighter loads because the case doesn't expand fast enough to seal the chamber. Nothing to worry about really. Go to a more powerful load and it will stop.

Using what cartridge, powder and charge? The brand of brass, primer and bullet don't mean much without that. Usually is a light load though.
It's not about how fast the case expands. It's about the case not expanding enough.

In my neighborhood the case can eventually expand enough but not fast enough. There is fast and slow powders.

How about doing a light anneal on the necks of these cases to soften up the brass so you get a tight expansion in the chamber? Got a small butane torch handy to touch them up before you reload?

Is case soot something to be concerned about? I've been getting some on my loads--- middle of the road--25g 4320 .223 2nd or 3rd loading.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it in a revolver but in a rifle I wouldn't want to see it. As said, it usually happens with light loads which is something I don't shoot in a rifle.

Let's see. Where does soot come from? Burning/burnt powder. Why did soot get on my cases? There is a leak somewhere. Where could there be a leak? When the pressure in the cartridge is not enough to press the brass into the chamber and seal the burning powder/gasses in, soot leak out around the case mouth...

Around the rim? Not the case mouth or shoulder or center of the case body, just around the rim?

Knowing all the details would certainly help to get you an answer....
I can't even make a guess as to what cartridge you are loading, which powder and how much powder , what gun are we shooting them from
....Lapau brass , 95 grain VMAX bullet and CCI 400 primers ain't much to go on.
Peyton, in reloading all the details matter ....sometimes big time. What's the rest of the story.

Nothing to add but I want to follow this thread. I get the same thing with my 25-06. Nothing I have tried has eliminated the sooty ring around the top of the neck. Accuracy is fantastic and the loads are at the high end of the load range so I haven't worried about a bit of soot.

I do not know but: Another reloader called and ask me if I was interested in some 7 Remington mag cases; the answer was yes. He brought me 80 cases that had what looked like 7 Remington Mag cases that appeared to have black porcelain necks. First I tried to scrape it off with a knife and then a file and then I called him as asked there the cases came from. He said a reloader/machinist/shooter that lived closed to him died, he said the cases came from him. After that I was curious about the rifle; I wanted to know where it was. I thought someone should be cautioned/warned about the chamber neck in the rifle, if the cases were any indication of the condition and the neck was caked with carbon the rifle should be cleaned before shot with factory loads.

In my opinion the shooter/reloader was using a powder that was too slow, I was going to suggest he go up at least one step to a faster powder. He could have been sizing his cases to short from the shoulder to the case head; that will slow things down also. The rifle could have a 'loose barrel but with a loose barrel the case body gets suited.

I have the same problem with my 45ACP cases shot from a 3" Colt 1911 . The charge is low , the pistol opperates fine and I don't mind giving it a good cleaning every time.
