case neck splits 25-06

While doing varmit hunting last month with my hand loads I had a problem with my case necks spliting. I was using the same ammo. that I used last year that I had left over. except , after 2 or 3 rounds were fired and the barrel heated up the case necks split on all the rounds fired thru the heated barrel !!! Sometimes multiple splits and sometimes full length of the neck . WHAT'S THE DEAL ????

Lotsa "If" in this. I'll start the guessing game.

If the brass has been reloaded a lot, case necks can split from work-hardening of the metal--it gets brittle.

If the rifle is controlled-feed, and if the headspace is a bit on the long side of spec: The extractor can hold the case against the face of the bolt, but the shoulder of the case is not seated fully forward. However, this condition would be more likely with new brass. Yours should be fire-formed to the chamber conditions of your rifle, unless you are full-length resizing.

Sounds to me like some case necks need annealing. Like Art said, after being resized too many times, the necks get brittle and crack.
