Case marking

What have you tried? I would like to have something that I can mark my cases with, so I know whose cases I’m picking up?

Revolver works :p.

Heh, but seriously, during those rare times when I'm going to go to the range when it's crowded (weekends), I bring a revolver for just that reason. Chasing brass is arduous enough without trying to figure out whose is whose.

As for marking, I've been to a couple competitions where using red is discouraged because it's the same color as snap caps. Most use black or blue; and have their own "brand" to distinguish. Me, I shoot revolver in IDPA. Mine are the ones that are in a tight little pile next to each other and are 38 Specials ;).

Rainbow Magic Marking. At our old league, every shooter had his own color pattern he drew across the heads in stripes. Since we were shooting low-pressure target loads, my dad used a hacksaw to put a groove in his case straight across the diagonal. I was the first in the league to try Top Brass and Starline cases just because nobody else had those headstamps at the time. If you have a use for 50,000 pieces or more in one purchase, Starline will put your personal headstamp on them. Winchester offered that service for a brief time in the 80's on orders of 2,000 or more. I wish I'd had the money at the time just for the novelty of it.

One thing I've done to keep track of how many loads have gone through a case is to use an automatic center punch to mark the head. You could do that for identification, too, but it isn't very clear from a distance.

I have some success with nail polish, it does wear off in the vibratory machine, but it last 3-5 cycles.

Sharpies maybe a couple of times.

Have to see about the Rainbow Magic, sounds easier (quicker) than nail polish (my wife was given an assortment, she uses it for art work, I was offered 4 bottles of bright colors to play with.

Dykem layout fluid makes a nice blue or red mark that won't tumble off, at least not with a vibratory case cleaner. Should last the life of the case
