Depends on whether it's done by some small operation with no guarantee on how it's going to look, or whether it gets warped during the process, or whether it's done by a world-class operation like Doug Turnbull.

Thanks Dfariswheel. His prices are not unreasonable and it looks like he does incredible work. The case colors are the most vivid I've seen.
 
Color case

Doug has made a fine name for himself and does great work...
Another one you may want to check out is www.classicgunsinc.com They done a Win. high wall for a friend and also done a nice job.
I'm also close to the point of having a Ruger #1 color cased,(my problem now) they both do good work! :confused:
 
I forgot to mention: Not only does Turnbull do the finest color case hardening, he researched the old factory's methods, so not only does he do great looking work, he can duplicate the colors and patterns to match that on original guns from different makers.

When Turnbull's says they do restorations, they MEAN restoration.
 
I have found cyanide salt bluing produces a tiger striped coloring similar to case bluing but more vivid.

I believe Stevens used this process on the 44 1/2 falling block (maybe specialty runs, I'm not sure how extensively it was used.)

Just wondering out loud...I bet nitre blued screws would constrast case or cyanide coloring well on the receiver. I think I might be able to do a nitre blue job myself for small parts (fore end tip for mannlicher stock, scope rings, butt plate, ect).
