Main match targets are recommended to be fabricated from metal and be approximately 16"
X 16" in size. Distances for revolver targets should be 7 to 10 yards, shotgun targets should
be 8 to 16 yards, and rifle targets should be placed at 13 to 50 yards.
Not all stages will have the same ranges. Some will have shotgun targets closer than pistol targets. Some may be so close together range wise you'll have to remember which targets get shot with what. Don't depend on just four shotgun rounds per stage either. Some shotgun targets are poppers that throw a clay pigeon when it goes down.
We generally use 16" x 16" targets for both rifle and pistol. Pistol targets are at 5-8 yds, rifle targets at 10-15 yds, shotgun knockdowns at 7-10 yds.
Be aware that the stated sizes and distances are RECOMMENDATIONS. They can be and frequently are highly varied both in size and distance. Our club shoots a lot of 40+ yard rifle targets and only a few of the pistol targets are as close as SASS would like. It gets very boring when all targets are the same sizes and same ranges. Good for the ultra fast shooters though.
