CAS .45 Colt Loads

I am looking at a couple of powders

Titegroup and Trailboss

just wondered if anybody had some nice low recoil loads they use on a regular basis for CAS?

For the record, I don't shoot CAS, but I've been tinkinering with Trail Boss.

Using 205 lead flat point bullets and Trail Boss (anything from 5.5 to 6.5 grain), I average 757 fps. In my heavy Vaquero, the recoil is super easy to deal with. The stuff is just so darn fluffy, it's very easy to use. It also burns extremely clean.

My old powder puff load was using Unique. I have already purchased a keg of Trail Boss to replace it.

I haven't used TiteGroup in .45 LC.

TiteGroup is a good non-position sensitive powder. I use it but use the max. fer my bullet weight. No powder puff there. hee hee Anywhoooo, the new thing fer shooting CASS loads are the "45Special" brass. With that short brass some pretty light loads can be used. No fillers or the like either. www.cowboy45special.com Tell Adirondack Jack that "rifle" sent ya over. hee hee

I've been loading up with 5.5-6gr. using the same 230 rn lead slugs I use in my .45acp's with real good results. Not a CAS, just a plinker that likes the old cowboy guns.

Took a peek I see they are coming out with rifle parts for the 45 special...keep an eyeball peeled on the site.

Thanks for the FYI

When I shoot smokeless in .45's for CAS, I use 5.0 - 5.5 grains of Titegroup with a 230 grain RN cast .45acp bullet held in place with a taper crimp.
Don't overlook Hodgdon's Clays as a good reduced load powder for cowboy loads too. I tried Trail Boss and didn't like it. The load density is nice, but I experienced erratic ignition, wider variations in velocity than Titegroup or Clays, and it's considerably more expensive locally than the other two.

appreciate the FYI. Ill have the gun shop order some Titegroup. They dont stock it but they do have Clays.

Wayner,

I'm new to reloading. Do you know, or can you guess about how many times can you re-use one of those 45special brass cases? Is there any re-forming that is needed after a certain number of shots?

Thanks

Does anyone know how these real light 45 loads compare to the light 38 cowboy loads in recoil? I would'nt think they are too much more recoil.

Howdy Wayner,...how're you doing?

You mentioned the new .45 Special brass. Have you been tryin 'em out?

I picked some up and they're fun to load and shoot with the new Big Lube bullet.....the EPP-45-150 , moulds available from Dick Dastardly over on the Darksider forum...

It's a great little bullet, and a fun, low-recoil one to use in the .45 Special brass. So far I've only tried a load of 20.8 gr FFg and there's plenty of boom & smoke, and they grouped close to point of aim at 25 yds in my Uberti '58 Rem with R&D cyl.

P.S........this 150 gr EPP-45 bullet has good potential as a front stuffer in percussion cylinder because it has a slight .450 rebate on the side of the base which allows the bullet to rest squarely on the cylinder.....

.......and it clears the frame nicely in the Remington.......

Just started doing some testing with the Trailboss Powder for something to shoot in my remmie conversion cylinders at an indoor range on these cold rainy days...so far good results with 200 gr rnfp oregon trail bullets i`ve tried 5.5 grs and 6.5 grs so far ..the 5.5 is a little puney ..the 6.5 grs loads are a little stouter but not too stout for a remmie ....still nothing like a case full of black powder . I`ve sent for a data book from Trailboss powder ..haven`t got it yet ..but hopeing it will have a little more data than their site .... good data is a little hard to come by for this fluffy stuff ...i do like the way it fills up the big 45 case though . They may have something here .

Trail Boss Experience

I've used Trail Boss extensively this year. A load of 5.3 grains behind a 200 grain Meister RNFP works great in my 45's. It's easy to work with and flows nicely through a powder measure.

Happy shooting
