Cartridge stop and guide on Rem. Nylon 66?

I've got this rifle's workings figured out and mostly assembled, accept for the cartridge guide insert and the cartridge stop. I took it apart as a kid to try and fix some problems with it jamming and I think I never got it right.

The guide insert fits nicely into the stock, but won't stay in place- it just falls out when I turn the rifle over. Does the cartridge stop have something to do with keeping it in place? And as for the stop itself, how does its leaf spring work? Is it pressing against the trigger guard, or something else?
