cartridge conversion cylinder for Pietta 1862 police?

I have been looking to get a few cartridge conversion cyliders for some of my PB pistols (pietta 1860 army, uberti 1858 remington, etc.). And I have been trying to find one that will fit my pietta 1862 police.

The Kirst website states that their cylinders for 1851/1861 navy pistols will also fit the Pietta 1862 police because it's the same frame as their 1861. What about R&d and Taylor's cyliders? They should work in my 1862 also, right?

Thanks.

Try swapping an 1862 Pietta .44 nd a 1860 Army .44...I think you'll find them the same cylinder. The 1860 conversion would fit the 1862 if this is the case.

The cylinder from an 1860 Army .44 would not fit on a Pietta 1862 Police .36 because the bottom frame is not stepped for the larger front half of the cylinder on the .44. Origionally the Colt 1862 Police and Pocket Navies had the frame of an 1849 Pocket Dragon with a stepped down frame to accommodate the larger front half of the cylinder like the 1860 Army .44. The new Pietta 1862 .36 is based on their 1851 Navy .36 which has no stepdown on the front of the frame. The cartridge conversion for Pietta 1862 .36 is the one that fits the 1851 Navy .36. Pietta has taken liberties in naming guns they produce but were never made in the percussion era.

Ok I meant .36 sorry I am so dang .44 oriented I can't help it :O)
So then the 1851/61 Navy .36 in R&D or Kirst should work just fine.
I wish they made one for the Pocket Police.

Actually I think Smokin Gun was right the first time. I'd never heard of Pietta's 1862 Police being made in 44, so I was about to post a message to that effect. I checked it out first and was suprised to find that they do indeed make an 1862 Police in 44 cal. So, the Pietta 1862 Police .44 cylinder and the Pietta 1860 Army .44 cylinders should indeed swap.

Thanks Mykeal ... I thought I knew that but couldn't quite recall (CRS) I sold an 1862 to a friend a mine up North...can't remember if it was a .44 or 36.
But thanks Mykeal for helpin' keep up my integrity :O)

Hungry Hunter did not say what caliber Pietta 1862 Pocket Police he had but I was assuming it was .36 (we all know what happens when we assume something). If it was a .44, then the cylinder from a Pietta 1860 Army .44 would fit and the corresponding cartridge conversion cylinder would fit. As I said in my original post, Pietta takes great liberties in creating guns that never were, both in caliber and size. That said I own a almost correct 1858 Remington .44 and an 1851 Colt Navy .44 which was never made. I enjoy shooting both guns but I would never consider the 1851 Navy .44 to be a replica, I would consider it to be a prototype they never made.

Thanks for the replies.

My Pietta 1862 police is .36 cal. I didn't know that they made one in .44 either.

So if I understand correctly, the conversion cylinders for a Pietta 1851 or 1861 navy will work with my pistol, right?

Thanks again for the help.

That surely sounds right to me...the Pietta 1862 Colt Police .36 cylinder should be the same as the 1851 Navy and the 1861 Navy Pietta .36 Colts.

Which are you gettin' R&D or Kirst? Gated or not, or drop in?

I don't have any Pietta to compare but I have two 62 Police pocket revolvers. Both have a 1.250 cylinder diameter. All the 51 Navy's I have are 1.500 more or less. The 62 Pocket cylinder is also an 1/8 inch shorter.

The 51 and 60 Navy is a 'belt' frame revolver. The 62 Police is a "pocket' frame revolver.

I think the Pietta 1862 Police .36 and the 1862 Sheriff .44 are the full size versions bigger than the Pockets. Much like the 1860 Army with shorter barrels.

bottom is my 1862 pietta complete with Kirst conversion.
top is pietta 1851 with R & D.
Either kit would work on the 1862.

Smokin_Gun,

After looking at mavracer's pic, I think I'll have to go with the Kirst. I really like the gated option as well. I'll just have to start putting a little more money into the "gun fund" since they are a little more expensive than the R&D's.

by the way, do you know of any good sources for .38 hollow base bullets - perferably round nose not wadcutters. I have plenty of .38 Special brass laying around to use to roll my own loads.

I don't have any off hand but will make mention a couple places ... and check around...
Track of the Wolf, Midway, Big Lube Bullets, or maybe Bear Bullets for starters...not loadin' any~yet!
