Cartridge carriers in the field

As I've posted before, my wife bought a Marlin 336 for me for our anniversary.

Right now, I have the ammo in the original boxes, but I fail to see the practical use in the field.

This gun doesn't have an external magazine, so a magazine pouch is less than optimal. Is there a good way to carry a good number of cartridges, either with webbing or a belt or some other contraption?

Thanks.

You could go with an on-gun ammo holder, or an on-belt mount. I've always liked the sleeves which ride on the the stock, usually holding about 7-10 rounds, plenty for hunting. I also picked up a folding case in the recent past. I load it with extra ammo for my .45 colt revolver and toss it in my pack when I go hiking. I've linked to Uncle Mike's products, but there are plenty of ones out there for between $5-12. Check your local sporting goods stores; around here Dick's and Gander Mountain have them, as does Walmart, I believe.

Those are great solutions for hunting.

I was thinking more in terms of quantities of 100 or so for SHTF situations.

Most hunters go into the field with WAY too many rounds. If I recall, your Marlin will hold 7 rounds which is about 3 times the number of rounds the average deer hunter shoots on any hunt. Unless you are planning on being attacked by deer, that should be plenty.:D

If it's a SHTF deal then I'd have to suggest an AR with a free floating barrel. You're talkin at least semi-auto, high capacity mags, and plenty of mag pockets/pouches to choose from when it comes carrying ammo. Pick a caliber ... they've got it (for the most part). Perhaps something to seriously consider. Maybe even JUST a stripped AR lower (build it any time in the future).

I was seriously considering a bolt action and installing a larger mag well, but it just didn't seem like the best bang for the buck when it came to the thought the SHTF scenario.

OK ... done with the rant. Do they make stripper clips for your 336? Probably not.

If they do the I'd look for something similar to this:

I googled "30-30 winchester ammo belt" and got the above. There are quite a few belts with loops for holding the individual rounds. Each one I see here holds 24 rounds. You could double stack the belts and double that to 48, then use the open spaces of the belt to hold the 10 round folding cartridge carriers. Even if you only put one on each belt, that gets you up to 68 rounds. Might start to get heavy there, plus you've got the rounds in your actual rifle.

I'm thinkin' 68 rounds of reload for a lever actioned SHTF rifle might be a start....

I done told you once...

100 rounds????
how fast do you think you gonna need to reload?
Trust me, If the SHTF you aint gonna want to do much shootin... but alot more scootin'.

The big idea is less about holding for immediate use, but for carrying like a bandolier or belt system instead of taking up room in my G.O.O.D bag.

I'd love to buy an AK or something similar, but a belt or harness is affordable right now and an AK is not.
