Carrying on a bus without a CCW - help me!

I know this isn’t the place to get legal advice but I’m throwing it out there and I’ll take your responses with a grain of salt.

So I live in Philadelphia and I’m going to my parents house in New Jersey and need to transport my springfield xd9. I’m going to be taking a bus from philly to New York City and another bus from new York to my parent’s house in NJ (I’ve done this trip plenty of times). I know usually the gun would be locked in the trunk but since I’m on a bus there will be no trunk. My guess would be to keep it locked in a separate case and carry that with me. That’s about it right? I don’t have much options so I guess that’s the best I could do. Does that sound kosher to everyone? Or are there any better options? The reason for the transport is that my dad is planning on buying a gun and wants to see and shoot mine to compare. Obviously I would not be carrying any ammo with me and I do not have a ccw yet. Are there any other precautions I should be taking???

Should I ask the driver to lock my case in the luggage compartment? I don’t want to draw any attention to myself or the case since it will not be big and I will be perfectly capable of carrying it. The bus is usually not full so the driver could easily say that case is small just put it on the seat next to you. And the second bus I take from ny to nj makes local stops so going into the luggage compartment will definitely attract attention at stops. And not to mention that the case will be mixed with other people’s luggage and bags which are not under the highest of security if you know what I mean.

Also, my xd9 has a 16 capacity mag. I’m going to call up ranges to check but does anyone know if this mag is legal in NJ? If not, I guess the whole transport trip is off. So that is my annoying little problem.

New York City has some very stringent rules on transporting firearms
Sounds like you might be committing a felony no matter how you transport it
Why not just rent one at a range for him to try out?

At the very least go to packing.org and check out the legal section for the states that you will be traveling through

Transporting across state line is usually tricky business, I have sometimes mailed things to a FFL just to be safe. This is a bigger deal than can be answered on a forum like this, it maybe shouldn't be, but it is.

SunnysideOS - do you really need to take the gun...or do you and your father just want to have the gun in NJ? Considering that regardless of how bad your need, possession of that gun in NYC would be a felony, and the hi-cap mag would be another felony in NJ, I suggest you think about how dire your need really is. Yes, the gun laws in NYC suck (I know - I work in Manhattan), but the trip to Rikers Island will suck a whole lot more.

NY's security overall is at an EXTREMELY high level due to the UK bombs. Searches of bus passengers are not out of the question if they find another.

If you're caught, I have a feeling you'd go to the sort of prison mentioned in Office Space. It's not worth it. I'm sure some ranges there have XD rentals?

Thanks for the replies. You guys are right - the legal hassles are not worth it. I’m going to tell my dad to drive down here if he wants to try out my gun!

Sunnyside - If you haven't been to Classic Pistol in Philly, give it a try. They have a really good selection of rental guns your father could try, and probably an XD. It would be much better than risking felonies by transporting through NY into NJ and its a nice facility and indoor range.
