Carrying in Vegas?

I haven't had much response on other forums. Going to Vegas next month. I plan on taking a firearm. After a few online searches here is what I plan to do: I will carry my firearm in the vehicle, loaded (but not on my person) until I reach Vegas. Then I plan on putting the gun in its case and locking it. I will then carry it into the hotel and secure it in my room during my stay. If necessary, I will ask the Hotel to secure it. Anyone see in legal problems with this scenario? Nevada allows carrying loaded in your vehicle. North Las Vegas has a strange ordinance about carrying "deadly weapons" in your vehicle.

While you are there, get a permit :) http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/nevada .

Also, something that you must know about North Las Vegas (hey, I was born there):

Nevada State Law is silent on motor vehicle carriage of firearms. Any law-abiding citizen may carry a handgun, loaded or unloaded, in their vehicle.

Some cities like North Las Vegas and Boulder City have "Deadly Weapon" laws, and you may be cited or arrested if you pass through their jurisdictions with a gun in the vehicle.

For Example:
Boulder City
7-1-3: Discharging Firearms, Air Guns:
No person except a sheriff, constable or police officer shall fire or discharge any firearms or air guns of any description within one thousand (1,000) yards of any building, street, sidewalk, alley, highway or other public place or have any firearms or air gun in his possession within one thousand (1,000) yards of any building, street, sidewalk, alley, highway or public place unless it is unloaded and knocked down or enclosed within a carrying case; provided, that this Section shall not prevent the maintenance and use of duly supervised rifle or pistol ranges or shooting galleries authorized by the City Council. This Section shall not prohibit the stocking of firearms by duly authorized dealers in the same.

North Las Vegas
9.32.080 Deadly weapon prohibited in vehicle--Exceptions.
It is unlawful for any person to have in his possession in any automobile, truck, motorcycle, or any other type of vehicle any dangerous or deadly weapon, but this restriction shall not be deemed to prohibit the carrying of ordinary tools or equipment carried in good faith for uses of honest work, trade or business, or for the purpose of legitimate sport or recreation.

North Las Vegas

Is there more to the North Las Vegas ordinance. This ordinance reads as though you can't have a firearm in your vehicle at all! How can someone go to the range? How can someone bring a gun home from the store? Is there a definition of "deadly weapon." The ordinance seems overboard. Under this language, I couldn't even lock it in my trunk in a gun case. Isn't there more to the ordinance or a definition?

This part allows the buying and the taking of the gun to the range
but this restriction shall not be deemed to prohibit the carrying of ordinary tools or equipment carried in good faith for uses of honest work, trade or business, or for the purpose of legitimate sport or recreation.
.

As for the part about having, look at the link that I've given. This is North Las Vegas, you need to find if the main strip is part of or where the boundries begin and end.

I went to Las Vegas last September. I didn't have a car and walked everywhere I had to go. I carried pepper spray pretty much everywhere.

I never got searched and never had to go through a metal detector. I suppose I could have been carrying my .45 in a deep concealment holster or a mousegun in a pocket holster and nobody would have known or even suspected... but that would have been against the law, so I didn't do it.

I would advise you to stay out of North Las Vegas (shouldn't be too hard - nothing much there anyway), and keep the firearm locked in your room when you are there. I wouldn't mention it to the hotel staff. Just keep a portable safe in the bottom of a piece of luggage.

Good luck! :)

Regarding buying a gun or going to range: Oh yes. Sorry. I did read that earlier, but I had a brain lapse. So, if I pack my gun with ear plugs and targets...then I'm ok? I guess what suprises me is that there is no exception for self defense (ie: no RKBA if your in a vehicle....even if unloaded and in trunk?)
Some are saying that I must register a gun with LV Police within 24 hours. Others say that the registration only applies to residents. Anyone know? Any links to their ordinances?

The Strip isn't anywhere near North Las Vegas. The City of Las Vegas is between the Strip and NLV. The Strip is in unincorporated Clark County and the Las Vegas city limits are at Sahara Avenue.

It would be surprising that you had any reason to go to North Las Vegas. When most people thing of North Town they think of the hood. There is a nice part of NLV, but the old NLV is what comes to most people's minds.
The only reason most people have to go to NLV is to pass through it on the way to Lake Mead.
It is no where near the strip.

To make a generalization: North Las Vegas is the "bad" part of town. It is on the other side of the tracks. If you wandered into NLV by mistake, heaven help you. Actually, you would probably be stopped immediately by the police. They would assume you were there to score some dope. If they concluded that you were lost, they would probably drive you away from the area for your own safety.
