Do you ever carry a knife rather than a gun for SD ?

My answer .... yes I rotate between the two I carry a custom fixed blade in a sheath on my belt right where i carry my gun...why, just depends on my mood I feel safe with both just the same...

Any other thoughts plz share.:)

And what if the bad guy you meet decides its his night to carry the gun...

I usually carry two knives but not for defense..... I would prefer not to have to get that close to the person attacking me.

I carry a knife on my weak hand side for gun retention. If someone grabs my gun, I can pull the knife and hack away at his arm.

Good Gawd, no! Why? We're talking defending your life here. If you're justified in using force to defend your life, you're justified in using deadly force. Now, or course, a knife can be deadly. The one BIG drawback is it lets the BG get within arm's distance. That's about 10 feet too close. I might carry a knife, but my gun will be my primary weapon of defense.

I definitely agree with the dont bring a knife to a gun fight... That said also don't understimate the guy with the knife, in the right hands and close range very, very deadly.

The reason I don't carry a knife is because in many places any knife with a blade that locks or is over two or three inches long is illegal to carry, my pistol is not.

I wont pretend to understand why this is but I want to be sure Im on the proper side of the law and I dont want to have to look up every local law in some place I might be passing through just to be sure.

Kershaw Tanto Blur

i used to carry a 4" automatic blade, but state trooper relieved me of it. now it's the kershaw blur. just as fast as the auto. It's with me all the time. same for a gun. all the time.

I'll carry an automatic knife when I'm jogging/hiking sometimes - mainly for the 4-legged critters. Sometimes it's raining or I just don't want to carry a gun for whatever reason and I'll grab a cheap button knife and toss it in my pocket for whatever its worth. I probably shouldn't do this.....but, occasionally I do. I know eough about knife fighting to know when to run....and how to get seriously injured. That makes me an expert, right?

No. If I can carry a gun, then gun it is. I usually carry a pocket knife, but that isn't for self defense unless I'm in a world of hurt.

The real question is, why would you carry a knife over a gun?

I can see circumstances where this applies: close to a state line or international border where, on the other side of the line, the laws are different. The good thing about a knife: it can peel fruit, spread mayonnaise, or open an avocado; try that with a pistol. :D

I carry at least three knives all the time, and as many as six at times.

But, I don't carry them for self defense.

A Leatherman Wave tool is always on my belt, and I keep a small, razor sharp pocket knife in my left front pocket. Another slightly larger folder sits in my right rear pocket with my wallet; this one is usually in various stanges of "dullness", and is the knife I use for stuff that doesn't require a really sharp edge.

Then sometimes I carry a small spring assisted Kershaw clipped to my right front pocket, and/or a fixed blade in a belt sheath, and/or a small fixed blade in a neck sheath. A man can never have too many knives.

These are in addition to my carry handgun. My two rules of knife fighting are: 1. bring a gun for backup, and 2. If you need the knife, use the gun.

The real question is, why would you carry a knife over a gun?

1. Because it's much smaller and lighter than any gun
2. Because it only cost me $15 and I don't care if it breaks, rusts or gets lost.
3. Because a kinfe has other uses besides self-defense.
4. Because it's better than nothing when I don't want to carry a gun.
5. Because I don't have a "gun for every occasion" and sometimes a knife does just fine.
6. Because I don't have a small carry piece that fits inside my pocket that I could care less if it gets soaking wet for several hours or muddy.
7. Because a knife will work just as well on a Bear as a .380 pocket pistol.
8. Because if I need to I know how to use a knife in the event of a dog attack.

As for the common sense belief in this thread of,

"Never bring a knife to a gun fight"

Even though I agree 100% with that. I was watching an interesting documentary on the the once famous outlaw of the 1870's Lewis Redmond and how later in his life he was confronted by a young hooligan with a pistol out in front of his house... and challenged to shoot it out..

Redmond calmly got up and slowly walked over to the guy explaining to him that this was a mistake and he didn't have a gun on him and the young buck should just leave before anything bad happened... of course the young guy who was being watched by all his friends just kept talking too... Redmond just kept trying to calm the guy down... until he got right in front of him... then he cut the guy from the groin up to his chest and back down again.....

How do you even walk with 6 knives, a gun, and probably keys, a wallet, and a phone? Do you wear cargo pants like every day or something? This is not meant to be offensive or an insult, I'm just deathly curious how you carry all that stuff.
