Carry Safety...Should I Worry?

Lately I have been using a waist pack as my mode of carry. Works great. so far I have two that work well. I have a smaller pack that I use for my Smith mod. 36 and Colt Det. special. Then I have a large pack that works well for large frame like my P90, 1911, or PT945. In all cases there is an internal holster to hold the pistol.

I have wanted to carry my XD9 (4") in a pack. I found one and the fit is good. I have been carrying my XD9 in this waist pack without any holster, just in the lined pouch pocket....with no other objects in that pocket.

Question:
Should I have any safety concerns? I guess the pocket itself is a holster so I am fretting about nothing?

It's not as bad as Plaxican carry, or no-holster-pocket-carry, but still I wouldn't be carrying without something covering the trigger, period.

It's just a no no.

Who knows what could happen.... and that's pretty close to some precious cargo.

You should look into something like this.....

You probably should keep the trigger covered. I commonly carry off body in a Maxpedition bag. The pistol pocket is lined with velcro loop fabric and they make a small "universal holster" that has the velcro hooks on the back and basically just wraps around the slide and trigger guard.

If I carried in a fanny pack that was not specifically designed for carry, I would sew in a patch of velcro loop fabric and attach the small "universal holster." This is not a hard job to do if you have access to a sewing machine or even just a needle and thread.

I have almost exactly what you have pictured for my large frame (not the XD9) carry. Mine is a Bulldog brand. Your point is taken. I think I will get one of the soft felt type Blackhawk hostlers to hold the pistol while in the compartment. That will cover the trigger and I can make it so the holster stays when I pull the gun.

Yeah, even at my age it's something to think about.:D

Good idea.

Wait, I could use the universal holster from my Bulldog pack. I never use both at the same time. All I need is a Velcro patch and that's easy to do.

I do not think it is a concern; however, since you are concerned it is best to use a bag with a built in holster.

Agreed. I do have a bag with built in hostler, it is larger than needed for my XD9, but until I get a smaller bag with hostler that's what I will use. I use a smaller bag for my revolvers but I have them in a soft Blackhawk holster inside the bag.

This thread me me re-think and that's good. Even with a grip safety I should not just have my XD floating in a compartment.

Thanks for the input.

Yes.
No.

Never leave anything to chance. If the trigger is not guarded, Murphy's Law will undoubtedly apply. Watch out for the "Boys".

Your right. I am now using a holster inside the compartment. This is not a speed draw contest. So if it slows me down a little it's still beats not having a gun.

It may actually speed things up with practice by keeping the gun positioned exactly the same for each draw.

I agree with John on this one. If I needed the gun, I'd want it to be in exactly the same I was used to.

Additionally, I wouldn't carry any gun that wasn't in some type of holster designed to protect the trigger. Accidents, no matter how unlikely they are to happen, happen.

I wouldn't worry about the safety factor. You have to puss in the grip safety for the xd to shoot, while pulling the trigger. Don't see that happening in the pack you described. My only problem is if it was swimming around in the pack then you wont always have the pistol in the same place every time you want to draw. If it stays in one place you are good.

I like holsters that cover the trigger - I carry a er Kimber Pro CDP II .45 and it's cocked & locked - the holster (Gelco) covers the trigger and the strap goes between the hammer & the firing pen.

I also carry a Ruger LCP in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster in my front pocket (it's there now). The pocket holster covers the trigger too.

I have carried in holsters that do not cover the trigger, but I'd rather cover the trigger if possible..

I've carried in fanny pack's for years and the gun is usually in a pocket holster in there too.
