Carry Law Recip. in GA

According to the NRA's website on carry law reciprocity, GA will honor out of state permits. I am planning on carrying a firearm in GA this winter on my annual business trip there due to an "event" that happened last year. Any advice for me on how not to PO the local LEO's?

Where in GA are you staying. Just make sure GA will honor your permit. I think we don't honor all permits but I may be wrong. The best way not to po a cop here is to not break the law.

Some other important information, GA is strict where you can, and can't, carry so please look at the link above.

Thanks for the adv. I saw that GA did honor IN permits. I also was aware that GA is indeed very strict about just where you can and cannot carry. I guess I should have worded my question differently. Can someone give me some advice on the places that I shouldn't carry? BTW I will be staying in Sandy Springs and doing business in Downtown Atlanta.

Atlanta is kind of anti-gun so be careful. If "sighted" you will be taken down like a felon until it's all sorted out.

Also be aware that not all LEO's know which permits that GA recongizes (sometimes even their own, story behind that one) so you may be detained until it's sorted out.

Be careful where you end up. I haven't been to Atlanta for years now but be sure you know where you are going. You can be in great multi-million dollar neighborhoods and three blocks later be in the bad part(s) of town.

If you do get lost, don't ask for directions on the street. Some parts are under constent watch for drug dealers/runners and if you stop and ask directions and then drive off, you probably will be stopped on PC of buying drugs.

Oh, and traffic is horrific.

Depends on what part of town you are in. In general, that's a good rule to follow.

I live here, in one of the northern 'burbs. About being careful: Quite true. Sandy Springs is pretty upscale, you should be OK there as well as most of the northern 'burbs. As far as Atlanta itself -- well, just be sure that you know where you are going and avoid the seedy parts. And there's a lot of seedy parts.

Especially if you are in the seedy parts. Not really a problem in the 'burbs.

You can say that again! I mean to tell ya! And talk about IGNORANT DRIVERS! Watch Out!

CAn't carry in bars and restaurants that serve booze.

W/O a permit is a felony. W/ a permit is a misdemeanor.

Don't pack in church, public gathering place (fuzzy definition), polling place, and courthouses.

The courthouse thing is funny though. Even after that fiasco in ATL, when I go to court in uniform (firefighter) I spike the metal detector. I always have two "rescue tools" on me (knife and a 'multi-tool' w/ a blade) that are visible.

I have never been searched.

Off duty. I have gone in wearing steel toed boots. As I approach I inform them of this. I am directed through the beeping md to the officer with "the wand". He promptly checks me for ....steel toes.

I always laugh after this "search".

Back on subject. I like the fact that Georgians are "down home" folks, and when you're broke down on the side of the road, a line will form of those stopping to help.

If you run into our rare "jerk" LEO, your problems will not go very far. Common sense still applies throuout most of the Chain of command, and our judges/ da's

Be polite and courteous to all.

Enjoy your stay.:)

thanks to ranger and usp for your guidance. just for your info I plan on carrying concealed in a belly band so visibility wont be a problem. I am aware not to go into many if any seedy parts of town. The only question I have remaining is what is it exactly is it that you consider to be a "gathering Place"

It matters little what I consider a gathering place:D

IIRC a court case here confirmed that McDonalds wasn't.

Common sense says that a ballgame, concert, rally, parade, etc, that is open to the public...admission notwithstanding...would be a public gathering.

I once (stupidly) fired 3 rounds over the head of a fleeing felon here in GA. No intent to hit him, nor chance he was.

Cop came, I admitted. Conversation follows:

Him: "Didja kill 'im"
Me: "No"
Him: "Did you hit him?
Me: "Nope, Didn't aim for him"
Him: "Where ja aim?"
Me: "'Bout 15' high. I did want him to hear them passing by."
Him: (chuckles) " You sure?"
Me : "yeah, I listened to him crashing through the brush for a while, while I was looking for his gun"
Him: "ya find it?"
Me: "Nope.:D "
Him: "yeah, right.;) If I have to come over here again tonight there is gonna be trouble"
Me: "Damn straight! There will have been trouble! G'night!"
Him: "'Night!"

Gotta love common sense.

BTW it was a loaded 9mm POS, rusty pitted barrel, that the guy was carrying as he attempted to break into my neighbors house for the 2'nd time.

just out of curiosity what did you do with that POS? Anyway, I appreciate the words of wisdom. I know that common sense usually prevails when it comes to concealed carry I just wanted to get some opinions from the locals b4 I came to your fair city toting a handgun. If all goes right, then the only person who will know that I am carrying will be me...

It is when all does not go well when your problems escalate. I have carried in D.C. with no problems.

I was unaware of the TSA's enforcement of local laws when I visited my homestate of NY on a hunting trip.

As has been my custom for years, I carried my Ruger .22 as a trail gun. I had no problem entering the state, hunting in the state, but trying to leave the state got me arrested.

Common sense did not prevail and I spent 6 months getting my carge of carrying an illeagle handgun reduced to disorderly conduct. And I had to replace my .22.

Don't expect the d.a. to have common sense if you find yourself dropping the hammer on some dirtbag with a boxcutter.
