carry gun cleaning

how often do you guys clean your carry guns? just after you shoot them or more often? I shoot about 2 or 3 times a month and that is how often they get cleaned. I was just curious what others do

I clean every time after shoorting but on a daily basis, I wipe them down and do basic function test. If for some reason, I haven't shot the carry gun, I still clean it once a month.

Depends on how often I shot it at the range. I know for a fact my gun will run 1500-2000 rounds without cleaning before it jams.

If I only cap off 200 rounds, I just wipe the slide and frame. Anything more, I clean it.

Clean them everytime after shooting,Wipe them down after handling. The carry gun gets cleaned and checked once a month. Everything in the safe gets checked and lubed every 6 months ;)

I'll clean every gun I shoot at the range, unless I know I'm going to shoot it again within a week.

Regarding carry guns, I'll wipe it down whenever it needs it. For example, if it was in my pocket, I'll wipe off the lint with a tissue or rag. If I carried it in my fanny pack while jogging, I'll spray it with rust preventative and wipe it down.

I clean after any range session for my carry guns. The idea is that I want them as ready to go as possible should something happen, although it is unlikely 100-200 rounds would make much difference. It is a personal thing.

One guy I shoot with strongly suggests lubing your carry gun once a week during the summer. Summer temps can evaporate some lubes and so relubing is a readiness precaution. When I relube, I usually field strip and redo all the surfaces with a clean cloth, wipe out the bore, lube and assemble.

FYI for those of you who don't know about using paper and especially using tissue paper. Most paper, with the exception of optical paper, is made from tree wood pulp. Trees, like other plants, absorb minerals from the soil. The excess minerals are deposited in special cells as "garbage." These minerals actually grow and while usually microscopic, they can get larger. These are called phytolyths. Whenever you wipe down your gun with a paper towel, you are essentially scratching the surface. Most paper is unsuitable for cleaning lenses as well. Over time, the lens will "frost" from the phytolith scratches.

In regard to tissue, most tissue is full of lint. I would not suggest using tissue as a wipe down. Generally speaking, a clean cotton cloth is a good choice.

If your carry gun (primary) is not getting fired in a training situation at least once a month you're neglecting it. Firing it is more important than cleaning it. Cleaning will become necessary because of firing it, not because it attracts lint!

Whenever I get the time. Usually after I shoot it, but not always. It's a good thing I carry a Glock.

Don't have to worry about the lube drying up as it can run bone dry.

I was told by my instructor if you carry a 1911 clean (re-lube it at least)it every week (or every 3 days), a glock every month. He did not recommend dry lube for the 1911, rather high temp grease (and it works). But grease attracts li9nt, dirt etc so your gun can jam. Any thoughts on clp/dry lubes for 1911's?

Once a week seems right to me esp. if you carry in an "open holster" like a yaqui slide or other minimalist approach.

I once bought some toliet paper in Mexico that musta had a lot of phytolyths in it 'cause my arse was sure raw for several days after using it!

Now...I clean my pistolas after every range session and lube 'em up proper. I check the safe every couple of months and re-lube the long guns and pistols too.
