Carry Ammo For Kimber Ultra Carry

Any suggestions for carry ammo in my Kimber Ultra Carry? With the 3" barrel I don't think any JHP ammo will expand. Should I just use Ball ammo? What is your suggestion and WHY?

I use the corbon 165 gr. @ 1250 fps ,the way i see it is if the hollow pointe does not expand then i still have a ball round but why limit yourself on purpose id rather take the chance that the round will expand than use the ball. Also the ball wil overpenetrate.

killer45auto: what do you think about Federal Personal Defense Ammo in 45ACP? Do you think they will expand in my pistol? I'm thinking about carrying my handload of 180gr SWC cast lead bullet loaded to 850 fps from my pistol. My thinking is that since un-expanded JHP ammo and Ball ammo will usually make about .35" hole in flesh might as well use SWC bullet and get .45" hole.

I don't know if wadcutters would be all that bad, but I think that maybe you should reconsider the idea of using reloads. I don't really buy into the theory that handloads are going to get you killed in front of a jury (though I'm living in ND) but I would be more concerned encountering bad rounds.

Each gun will shoot differently but my Ultra Elite love the Hornady 200gr SXT. When I first got it, I bought a box of a variety of bullet sizes and brands from 165gr to 230gr and the SXT was a clear winner. As there will never be a clear winner in the "small and fast" versus the "big and slow" debate, I'm guessing that the middle of the road 200gr isn't a bad compromise. Whatever you decide to use, make sure to run at least 100 rounds through it to ensure reliability. If it gags on even one round, it's not acceptable.

My idea of gun control is watch the front sight and use both hands!

My wife carries one of those and we keep Federal Personal Defense 165gr. in it. It is very accurate and recoil is not bad at all. I share your concerns about expansion out of such a short barrel. She shot some cor-bon 165 and the recoil was just too much. I like the federal load and think it has a good chance of expanding but it's all a crapshoot anyway. YMMV byerly

I use Corbon 185 gr JHP. Functions flawlessly in my Ultra Elite. As for expandability, I really can't comment on that. The UE is only carried during the extreme hot months in Pennsylvania. The rest of the time, I carry a Wilson CQB with 230 gr Hydro-Shoks.

Taco,

I carry Speer Gold Dot 230 gr. JHP in my Ultra Elite. I have had no problems with the UE and any ammo I have tried. I am no expet but I have friend who is a SWAT trainer recommend the Speers. Again, his argument was if the HP does not open, you still have the heavy .45 round. In reviewing several research articles, there seems to be no guarantee tha any HP will expand.

Taco,

Custom loaded for several Ultra Elites -- best bet is probably 230g Golden Sabers...or Remington 185g JHP+P's...

One other possibility is to use the Blazer 200 grain JHP. I have shot a box of this in my Kimber Ultra Carry and had no malfunctions. I've never seen much info on Blazer as a defensive ammo, but how bad could it be?
