carry advice

After many years of toting a custom 45 Colt Commander and with the approach of summertime, I am once again considering the once unconsiderable...and that is acquiring a "pea shooter" in 38 caliber....something hammerless or bobbed...something I can literally throw into my pocket, stick in my jeans or suit pockets....

Something slick....tuned action.....capable of handling plus-P ammo or at least some small diet of it....

I made a mistake many years ago and let someone talk me out of a S&W airweight bodyguard...

So, what's out there today? How about the Taurus revolvers? Are they quality and can they be tuned like an older Smith?

Just some good sound advice to a veteran shooter would be appreciated.
 :)

I carried a model 38 bodyguard airweight for quite a while. The problem was, I never practiced with it because it just wasn't fun. Switched to a Glock 27, but didn't like the trigger. Now I have a Ruger SP101. I love it. It's great to shoot, the grips are comfortable and the sights are great. I was sure I'd get another S&W when I bought it, but this one has been perfect.

It rides everyday in my right front pants pocket, in an Uncle Mike's model 0 (zero) with the plastic clip cut off.

I've got a little Taurus CIA 650. It's a 357 Magnum, 2" barrel, Hammerless, Matte Stainless. It fits in my front pocket easy, shoots good, and it didn't cost much, $ 309.

Jim Take a look at the Taurus 85 line. I know that they carry at least one that is +P rated and is in their Ultralite line. Can also be had with a bobbed hammer. I have had an 85 Ultralite and have had no trouble with it. Worth a look-see. :)

Highly recommend......whatever pocket gun you choose, use a pocket holster. Keeps junk out of the gun, keeps the gun orientated consistantly so it is where you are reaching. Less likely to snag on the draw. etc etc.

One of my pocket guns is a 2½" round butt Model 19. Enough heft to be a joy to shoot with .357mag ammo, yet small enough to dissappear with minimal clothing adjustment.

"Pea shooter?" well, excccuuuuuuuuuusee me

Oh well....up next to a .45, most everything's a pea-shooter!

I own two snubbies: A taurus model 85 ultralite which I use for home defense because of the exposed hammer. It's a sweet shooter right out of the box and I have put several varieties of Georgia Arms Plus-P ammo through it with no handling problems.

The one I take with me is a creampuff used S&W model 638 "bodyguard." It's the one with the shrouded hammer that allows for a single action pull but will not snag in the pants. It is stainless steel/aluminum alloy and weighs just 15 oz. Mine is box-stock and I am completely satisfied with the trigger action, especially in DA where it seems to have a very short, smooth action. It is Plus-P rated and is easily the best revolver I've ever owned.

Drawbacks on the snubbies? The sights are small and rudimentary, unlike some of the 3-dot semi-autos. However, the snubby can be brought into action almost instantaneously.

I also would consider buying a good used one over new. In my area, the market is saturated with used revolvers at bargain prices. Good luck on your search. I still think your best bet is a used Smith or a Taurus M85 with a bobbed hammer.

I have a S & W 442..................

with Barami Hip Grip. This is a light, comfortable J frame and with the hip grips I can safely wear it concealed when I wear shorts, sweat pants --- anything fairly light. Conceals well and shoots well too, as long as you practice. Good shooting:)

I've been stalking a Colt DS 2 or Magnum Carry for a year.. hard to find but I want one darnit! OK its a bit big for pocket carry... but it gives you 6 shots over 5.

Another oft overlooked "snubby" is the model 10 with a 2 inch barrel.. they do exist and can be tuned.

I've got a Taurus 605 in .357 mag. Ported barrel and bobbed hammer. Works great and I wouldn't call the .357 a pea shooted compared to a .45 just because of a smaller diameter! I should give you all the thump your used to in your .45s.

The only thing I'm not sure of is how similar trigger tuning on the Taurus is to the S&W you mentiond, but then my Taurus didn't need it!
