Carry "A" Concealed Handgun?

I enjoy being a member of various gun forums because I find other peoples experience and knowledge an invaluable continous learning aide.

I try to research things thoroughly myself before I ask questions on a forum. I have a question that I can't quite seem to find a satisfactory and/or complete answer to, so I thought I would ask and get some opinions.

I have a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit (so this question is based on VA info) It says Permit to carry "A" concealed handgun.

My question is, does this A) mean the type of weapon, B) the quantity of weapon, or C) Both.

If I decide I want to carry a belt holstered handgun as well as a ankle holstered back-up, is this illegal. Could it be percieved or prosecuted as illegal by law enforcement or District Attorney's.

I am also curious if this is a state by state thing. Also I wonder how many of you carry more than one handgun at a time.

Thanks for your help,
Guzz~

Not sure about Virginia, but most states require you to provide a list of the gun(s) you intend to carry for CCW. Some states (like CA) may require the serial number to identify a specific gun. Others, such as Nevada, do it by model (e.g. S&W 649).

In Nevada, for example, if your permit lists a Colt 1911A1 and a S&W 36, you can carry both at the same time. However, unless your permit has the Colt 1911A1 listed twice, you can only carry one at a time. Confusing, huh?

Check with your state's issuing agency. They probably have a FAQ that covers this information.

Guzz, it is a state-by-state thing. Here in NY, it's a county-by-county thing.

Call the office that issued your permit (from a pay phone!).

I have carried with a permit in TX and WA and pack 2 whenever possible, + a couple of folding knives. I got hit by a truck in TX and the police rifled my person while I was unconscious, finding 2 handguns, a Cold Steel Desperado boot knife, and a S&W folder. There was no problem with the quantity of my armament, but I was fined for getting run over on a dark street.

VA CHL was at one time actually a CWP. During the time that it was, police and the other "special" people with good reason could carry many different weapons concealed. Such things as switch blade knives, AOW shotguns etc. were covered by the permit. Since 1995, VA became a "shall issue" state. They changed it to a CHL, to specifically indicate that you are allowed to only conceal handguns. How many you can carry is not defined. The police are still issued the CWP, regular citizens get the CHL.

I sometimes carry an semi-auto and a revolver back up.

Just for general information. You cannot carry a pocket knife in your pocket. The knife must be either in a case worn, on the belt, or clipped to the top edge of your pocket, clearly visible.

VA is an open carry state. A person is able to carry a loaded handgun in plain view while operating an automobile, without the need to have a permit to do so. Either in the dashboard or on the passenger seat in plain view.

Those with a CHL will of course conceal theirs ;)

In Tennessee they permit the person and not the weapons. I can carry a 1911 on each hip, a .38 on my ankle, and a Glock in my shoulder holster if I want. No limit for us on how many or what type, just where.

When I received my VA ccw about 5 years ago I was under the impression from reading the law that you could carry multiple handguns on you.
